I guess you would have to hear it to diagnose but I thought maybe the waste gate spring would make like a rattle kind of sound.

No the wastegates don't make much sound. Wastgate chatter is not actually noise from the wastegates either, contrary to popular belief that sound is actually the air rushing backwards through the turbo.

Waste gates can rattle when the spring( wastegate actuator ) returning them to the closed position weakens over the years, its the arm itself rattleing probably as you wouldnt hear the wastegate rattle.

technically they could chatter, if the turbo had a huge amount of inertia and was running high boost with no dump valve.

but its not the noise that everyone thinks it is, as mentioned earlier its the flow refersing thru the compressor and going into surge.

 

as for ur noise, check all your hoses and jubilee clips for leaks etc

but check the noise ur getting isnt detonation or ur in shit it sound like u have ball bearings rattling around on the crown of the piston, its a NASTY sound!
