Autobox Cooler Fitment

My laziness has got me in a bit of a predicament..well, that and watching the World Cup instead of doing the job myself :(

I purchased an autobox cooler rad mod kit from the Z Centre and took it along to my local garage with all the instructions blah blah.Everything seemed ok and indeed Ive run the car for a couple of weeks now. Today I decided to have a peek at the rad whilst messin under the bonnet and it seems that the guy at the garage has removed the old engine oil cooler rad completely and has run the engine oil through the old autobox cooler in the main radiator core  .Question? how will this affect the car, will the engine oil cool sufficiently and if not what symptoms am I likely to see.

Thx for any help you can offer.

the first question wtf has he removed the oil cooler for, this has had a negative effect in many ways and ide go back and tell him to put it back on plus a engine oil flush and change because its now contamanated with atf

Sounds like your local garage has no idea about the 300zx mate. :(

Nissan put an engine oil cooler there for a damn good reason - these engines generate an awful lot of heat!

I thought the Z centre conversion (for a j-spec car) supplied an extra oil cooler for the engine, then the gearbox oil was cooled using what was the original engine oil cooler? Surely this would have been easy for even a baboon with a tiny bit of mechanical knowledge. I reckon even I could do it

No mate, start as Znut said - go back and tell him what he shall do for you. You've paid for the work afterall.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

ummm i have an aftermarket engine oil cooler so had my stock cooler spare.

I flushed it through with degreaser and atf until it was clear and then decided to fit it myself on saturday which took me about 3 hrs to fit up (after getting drenched with hot radiator water when disconnecting the bottom hard pipe!!! )

if your local garage couldnt do it and messed it up they must be really and i mean really ignorant.

get them to re-plumb everything while you friggin watch, no way is the cooler in the rad man enough for the job, plus the engine oil you are running at the mo is heavily contaminated with atf which could lead to possible engine failure as i think it thins the oil..

mate go right back and shoot the feckers

original engine oil cooler is supposed to be used as the new atf cooler and the mocal one you get with the z centre upgrades is a new one for your engine.

Take it to someone who knows WTF they are doing. Luckily my local garage is a motorsport place where all the lads who work there are into motorsport. Even so they said get us a workshop manual if you want us to work on it so we don't Fook anything up !!!

Take it to a specialist the trip will be worthwhile. Even Nissan dealers were scared of the complexity when it was a current car. In the early days of my ownwership I had so much trouble by monkeys not knowing what they were doing. Like my boost controller that was connected to the wrong pipe by the reputable Z dealer who I bought it off!

Proceed with caution mate
