Just two quick questions really....

1...which is the more relaible while the TT is in standard form?

2...which is the most reliable/stronger when the car has been modified?

or I guess theres a third...

3...If the box needs modifying while engine is modified which would be cheaper and easier??

Regards

Reece

Most autoboxes are ready to give up the ghost at around 80k, although some go on for ever if they've been drove like a granny (unlikely!). 1k plus to recondition. A good nick auto box can take a fair bit of power, but if its the standard original box then chances are you'll be helping it on its way to failure.

Its much cheaper to buy an uprated clutch (smithy does rps ones for £350ish??).

Manual boxes are generally a lot more desirable, but some people like autos. My first Zed was an automatic and I personally would never consider one again. IMO you buy a zed because you want an involving drive, not to have auto gearbox, cruise control and all the other gubbins. Dave

As Royal mentions the Autobox is the weakpoint in the zed once they get to high mileage or high power.

The Manual boxes are very strong, one of the strongest out there (with only a rare problem with syncro's going in 4th gear causing a crunching noise). Plenty of 600bhp+ zed's running with stock Manual boxes.

nice one cheers guys, think I know pretty much have an idea of the 300 I want, as I will once again start my 1/4 miling with any luck. Used to do a lot with the MR2, addictive.

Auto box is weaker on the J-spec car owing to lack of decent oil cooler.

Uk spec autos should fare better (says hopefully with a UK spec on 85k miles now and still going strong....... :wack: )

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

78k on UK Auto with stage 2 turbo's and 1 bar boost and still running fine!
Best book in for a recon now you've said that :nelson:

yeh but they can have there problems with crunching i wouldn't want to do a manual conversion to end up with crunching gears. thats why i was wondering about an uprated one

The later boxes- 95 onwards had a redesigned 4th gear syncro.

So.........about 5 cars out there with this upgrade then LOL

Seriously what numbers of manuals would have been sold in 95?

Anyone know?
