Dilema Delux!!! Opinions needed

OK Here goes

My best m8 has the choice to buy one of the following:

MR2 Turbo

ST185 Celica GT4 or Carlos Sainz

Nissan 200sx

Now, he is limited to a budget of £5000 and is not sure whether to blow it all on a MR2 or a Celica OR buy a 200sx and do some engine and body mods.

Cheers

Latz

PS I'm a speed freek so i advised a 200SX with a skyline lump!!!

Sorry, pal,

why is a stock (but cared for) 300ZX TT not the favoured option?

The £5K may cover the Skyline engine, but what can he put it in?

Wheelbarrow might be fun wink.gif

Dave

good point Gio, he finds them rather on the overweight side (lard arsed) and doesnt want to go to that engine size (just yet!!!)

Latz

There is little point asking other people really. Its up to him. They are all very different cars. You have a rally car (Depending on what year), a rear engine 2 seater turbo and a 2+2 front engine turbo.

I know that the MR2 Turbo is very fast and gets 245bhp out of the engine which is very impressive, and I hear its 0-60 is around 5.2, but I am not too sure on the reliablility of that information. But being a Jap import insurance may be an issue.

I couldnt really comment on the other 2 really.

What every car he feels best with is the car for him. Why not a Z? He could get a decent one for that price. I know I only paid £4500 for mine but it needed some body work.

okey dokey young feller-me-lad, what is your m8 after that got him to choose those? Reliability, speed, insurance, maintenance etcetcetce?

SRRAE has a point.

In addition, consider that it is better to pay high for a good one than pay low for a wreck and then expect to bring it up to spec for less overall. Unless you are really sh*t hot which I am not. (xcept in peotry).

Is your m8 a top spanner man? If not, think carefully....

He likes the shape of the Celica GT4 or Carlos Sainz but wants something that is tuneable.

The reason i went against an MR2 is that they take off from the front end after about 130Mph, so that really just leaves a celica or 200sx.

I prefer the 200sx cause i know you can do more to it than the celica and you got much more support for it.

However, he is really not sure and wants to choose between those three only as he only really likes them.

incidentally, insurance isnt an issue as he is in the motor trade

Cheers

Latz

If the man's in the trade, he out-qualifies me anyway!

I ended up with the best car on earth by going out looking for an MGB GT V8. Warped or what?

If we're down to a final three - go drive them. Really - how they fit him and how he fits them will be far more illuminating than anything else.

I still think a clean 300ZX is the classiest choice smile.gif . If not one of ours, look at the earlier ones (oh no, we're back where I started!).

I'd spend the f^%^ing lot on a plane ticket to Bangkok, then a rail ticket down south, followed by a gondala to Koh Samui and with the change I'd buy some drugs and a hoochee.

If you want fast, get a Motor Bike. biggrin.gif

My dads 10 year old grandad BMW does 0-60 in 3.9

I drove my mates MR2 turbo for a week (200 rwhp) and I can tell you it's a laff and quite a handfull. Bloody gutless, so you have to rev it, but when it's reving - Jeez ! Trouble is they don't go in a straight line under power. They might be hairdressers cars, but the turbo is a kind of hairy legged transvestite version ! biggrin.gif

dont know if any one is interested but im selling a supra mk3 turbo (i just read thst some one wanted one) its in good nick white with blue leather interior if any one is interested mail me at si300zx24v@aol.com

sorry for getting off the point but it could be another option as well

The GTfour is quite a good buy, however the ST205 is a much better car as a whole, even though it shares the same 3s-gte engine. The Carlos Sainz (rc edition) is a better performer than the 'normal' gtfour. The engines in these things is massively over engineered and is very good to tune up (apparently) it is a common block to use in Toyotas motorsport affairs. However it does have a top mount intercooler, thats one thing i dont like about it, and people have said the car feels a little detached from you, but how it feels i dont know. Dont know much about the other two.

Ooh, fancy pants mr2 turbo, also uses the 3s-gte engine, so get one of these i reckon (either car with the 3sgte engine), very good engines indeed!!

Its what he wants from the car at the end of the day, as the same power can be extracted from both the MR2 and GTfour.

Just remember if its the GTfour, it has to be covered in mud all the time! its in the sales brochure, hehehe.

I'll say it again, the 3s-gte is a great engine!

I had a st185 before my z. you can get them to go prety well as the engine is actualy a lump that was designed for racing should hold about 350-375 with no internal mods. same goes with transmision, but a word of warning the gear box is the weak link! mine went.

he is better off going for the carlos sainz as it has the super strut front suspention and a more punchy engine(smaller turbo but same power) handeling is ok but ride is far too soft. the car has big potential but somehow misses the mark better of getting a scooby if he wants a 4 wheel drive

personaly I would go for the 200sx

If he wants to look at tuning potential on the celica look at this site

www.fensport.co.uk

hope this helps

I was in a similar position lately......... Mrs Blow me wanted an MR2 turbo . I looked at loads of different vehicles and didn't see any I would be happy buying.

Then ,one day out car hunting she spotted this ugly hatchback lurking at the back of a dealers garage........ after a test drive she came back with a mad grin on her face and said she must have one.(ooer!)

Oh , it was a Nissan Sunny........ albeit the GTi-r ........ Good fun but fugly!!

MR2 Turbo, MR2's are nice rides, my m8 has one, they don't take off at 130mph, we've hit 140mph+.

The standard tires are rated for 130mph and can blow up at greater speeds,

They are only half leather interiors and you can only get them as imports which are minuses for me personally.

My choice out of your selection would be MR2 defiently they hit 60 in 4.9secodns :O)

Mike

Dont forget, only some MR2 turbos had 245 bhp, some had less, 245 bhp was the last revision, i think, just make sure anyways.

Forget the lot dude, I reckon the best bet is a Renault 5 GT Turbo, had one, goes like shit off a shovel and you can park it anywhere you want! Failing that, get a horse, I must admit they cost their weight in feed, but there's not quibble about tyre size, their bhp is all their own, and the engine never blows. Mind you, there's a lot of time spent clearing up the 'mess' they make! Failing that, go for a Humvee, won't go that fast but you can 'drive all over' anybody you like and that's worth more than all the horses in the world (except mine of course) x x x x x x x

Go on, Mrs T - put a pic of your GG in your rides section.

Go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on

It'll be unique amongst the pics us sad gits post!

You are dead right mate, but as with the Z beast the Japs went even more Banzai at about L reg I think and increased the BHP to about 235 FFS! So put that together, hairdresser with a two seater and 235 bhp???

Satan in the making!!! LOL biggrin.gif

I love the MR-2 for what it is...what I hate with a vengeance now is the MGF and the new Rovers! Fuck sake!

Was watching some motoring show on the beeb this week and in the MGF you don't even get POWER STEERING! Wind up windows etc.

Sorry but the old style Jap cars whoop the latest Brit offerings big time.

Oh and just to let you guys know that the twin-entry turbo jibe is from Yamaha and was built at their factory in Yokohama I think...say no more! These are the guys who produce some of the fastest 2 x wheel machines on planet earth! REZPECT! wink.gif

Yep me old mate, you are right!

I was misquoting on 235bhp, the later ones had that much. wink.gif

Fuck me that is serious in a car that size though??? I love the GT-Fours and as someone pointed out the Carlos Sainz is the one to go for. They even have a plaque inside stating that they are a limited edition! Absolute CLASS CAR!!! wink.gif

P.S. sorry guys but Pulsar/Sunny GTi-R is sex, but Mrs T needs an auto so they are out! Bummer! wink.gif
