Ok, today was the day that i finally took the zed to a specialist.

I took it to Jeff at Zedworld, I have to say what a good bloke he is, and not to forget his son either, another top lad.

He's sorted my idle issues out, temp sender, gave the zed an assesment and conzult, boost leak check, throttle balance, timing, base idle.

Also looked at my oil leak.

He also done a compression test for me.

the result started off looking mint,

cylinders 1 & 3 both came out at 160psi :D , number 2 then came out at 165 :hyper: (all still looking mint).

Then we get to number 4  and would anyone like to take a guess as to what it was?????

58psi :headvswal :headvswal

I couldn't beleive my eyes. ive never seen compression so low before :( ,

Cylinder 5 was 158 and 6 was back up at 160.

Anyway thanks again to Jeff for all of his time and hard work, definately be going back with my business (which will be alot knowing my zed  )

Still a real shame he's not here any longer, i have to say i think the club is missing out :(

I know what you mean. The money I had put back for a retrim went on a complete engine rebuild. But it was worth it though as my car now sounds brand new. Absolutely glorious the engine sounds. Used a very low mileage block, and my old heads and refurbished the lot.

Nope, he was too spineless mate. Anyway, one good thing did come out of it. The block and crank were absolutely pristine. No wear on the shells at all. So used that as the basis for reconditioning since my old block was totally shagged.

I think it was a very low mileage block he sold me as there was no bore wear or shell wear at all and the shells were original. But the rest of it was crap. One head wasn't even torqued down and one head gasket had a hole in it the size of a 10p piece. So no way could his 'guarantee it 100% running' actually have meant its worth, because basically, the engine would not have ran with a head not bolted to the block, let alone the hole on the head gasket.

Anyway, all’s well that ends well. I have an absolutely amazing engine now. Just sounds like brand new. So smooth.

I'd rebuild your current engine mate. A rebuilt engine is always a safer bet if it's done properly. But maybe you've run out of cash. Saying that, for the cost of removing and the cost of another engine, I doubt there's much in it.

Mind you, knowing Jeff, I'm sure he'd come up trumps with a good engine.

how much has your rebuild cost so far i'm thinking of doing one soon and was wondering the cost of it

Im thinking ive buying an engine-sitting it on a engine stand completely stripping at rebuilding with with the best parts i can afford over the winter and put it in next year.

then i can i can have a nice engine and sort outthe engine bay as well when the old ones out.i can then sell the old engine if its still running.

I'd budget for around £2,000 I paid less, this includes engine in and out. The crank and shells out of the spare engine I had was as new (so needed no work), gave the block just the very lightest of re-hones to give the new rings a chance to wear in, had new shells, mains, piston rings, EVERYTHING was measured for tollerances. Heads were refaced and had all the pistons lapped back in. The entire lot was cleaned in a chemical parts washer.

Basically it had its 60k service too...so new water pump, belt, rollers etc etc.

So if you add it all up like that, it's pretty good really. Then you can start adding tubos on top of that etc etc.

the thing is if the was the case i'd have rebuilt the origional engine that i had. And i dont see why i should buy an engine from a trader for a grand then pay another 2grand to fix it

Well, that's something you need to sort out with him. In the meantime, check the state of the bores in your old engine. If they are free from wear, then rebuild. Of not, rebore, sleeve or fit oversized pistons.

Im about to join this engine rebuild malarkey this winter with a spare motor-hope you get sorted bird-i dont know how you have come this far with out taking a hammer to the Z!

is there any difference between the na block and the tt? might be able to help

I looked into this actually. As NAs rarely suffer from bore damage like the TT does, it could be a good idea to use an NA block. I think it's the same, but was never 100% sure. There are a few oil feeds on it of course which the NA doesn't have, but from what I can make out, they are the same.
