Knife-edging the crank of a VG30DE(TT) can have a positive effect on the rotating mass, especially when combined with other lightweight parts (rods/pistons/flywheel/pulley), but make sure the crank + extra parts are balanced VERY well together.

It's a bit overkill on a VG with stock rods/pistons unless you want to squeeze every little bit extra out of the engine

Our engines hold very little oil in comparison to other engines. Most of the oil is spread over other areas of the engine/turbos, so the crank doesn't "slosh" that much through oil at all in comparison to engines with more oil and so it barely looses any power over this.

I've found two companies who offer the service so far, no mention of prices though.

It will be going in with new rods/pistons.

Yup one of the main design features of the VG30DETT was this and also the Sump baffle design, so its an engine where knife edging the crank shouldnt be high on your to do list :)

Oh right so i wouldn't bother do it yet then as there are much more important things to spend my dosh on.

What else would you recommend doing to the block? cleaning water ways etc.

and what should i be expected to pay?

Knife edging a crank lightens it as well as making it cut through the oil easier, but it can also weaken it as you are removing metal and to be honest for no real benefit on a 300 as has been said not much oil to sludge through, if the price is right though maybe worth considering, especially if you have the engine out for a rebuild.

Mines been done, along with uprated con-rods and pistons, etc. I'd like to actually see it to prove it but it certainly runs well.

Just out of interest how much did it cost and where did you take it?
