It sounds like my exhaust is blowing around the middle of the front section of the exhaust, until I get under the car I can't really tell, but it''s got me all exited now about the possibilities.

My car has done 89K miles without missing a beat, no blue smoke anywhere.

Now the question - on 89K tubs, would you replace the front section with decats and risk the oil seals or get some second hand (hopefully good condition) replacement pipes with cats on?

Hmm.

  1. 1. Decat or not?

    • Decat - yes it's worth the risk for better performance.

Looks like cols_almera in H&A is having the same dilemma.

I decated mine ooooo must be a few months back now.The zed didnt blow any smoke before that and after on tickover i couldnt see behind me,cars still in bits waiting for the turbos, better give him a phone:).If your willing to take the risk do it but be prepaired for a big bill if it goes wrong m8.

Hovis that was hard luck, must have been ready to blow anyway tho.

Matz, deffo decat, what's the point of having a performance car then throwing a spanner in the works to make it slower. Nasty, power robbing, heavy useless lumps, get rid!

My last Z (1990 TT) was decatted when I bought it, drove it for two years with no probs.

I decatted the Rx7 myself and the power gain was amazing, so much more responsive, had to fit a boost controller tho to control the over boosting (don't think you'll have that problem with a Z).

No chance. Do that and it's wave bye bye time to your turbos. If yours are originals at 89k, then they'll not last too long.

decatt, then blow your tubs, then get bigger tubs

thats what i did, well i aint got the tubs yet but im saving lol

De-catted mine recently and have had no adverse effects apart from a noticeable increase in performance. I did opt for some smaller silencers in place of the cats, so that may hwlp with a little bit of back pressure.

Mines a Jap import with about 75K (miles) on the clock.

Gaz

Heard its about 20-30bhp increase with a De-Cat hard to believe that much increase but its a possibility I think. But drive is noticeable n feels lighter on the pull off.

Far better response, quicker spool up and more power.

A decat can unmask an existing turbo seal leak problem that the cats were hiding, but previous polls and threads have shown that very few have had problems.

  • 9 months later...

mine was decated when it came over from japan, so not sure how long its been done(at least 4 years though), ive not had any problems as of yet.

i did it, and the difference in the sound the car made was immense!, it was not to much loader, but the change in tone of the exhaust was pheonominal.

The performance difference was instantly noticeable, although i put new downpipes on as well, especially after i wound up the boost to 14.5psi.

On 85k turbo's id be warey in all honesty, like has previously been stated, the cats will mask any seal probs you have. Id personally start saving up for new tubs as soon as you put them on, then when they do go it wont be a massive shock.
