Still looking for a black UK 300zx.

Just wondered are there any visual differences between the JSpec and UKspec Z.

Featured Replies

J specs are mostly limited to around 112 mph uk ones arent. Ive recently bought a J spec and found that all the imports were generally in better conditoin than the uk ones, i put this down to the fact that people who bought the new uk ones were probably company directors etc that gave the cars a good hammering most of their lives, whereas the japs got them cheaper therefor your everyday joe could get one and tended to look after it better. Thats my theory anyway!

UK spec have different indicator setups and rear fog lights in the rear bumper:

Heres how the UK front an rear look(pics nicked from Craigs Ride biggrin.gif )

An heres a J-Spec front(Warrens shiny Zed):

Also J-Spec have the little reflectors on each side of the rear bumper.

like your rear lights

Cheers mate but they are a photoshop mock up, its an idea I'm working on:

My jap spec is a little different to some of the things on the list. The dash guages dont seem to have as many warnign lights as the one shown, but mine is a 91 so the pic maybe of one which is younger than mine. The front fog lamps units also have useless side lights in them. The J-spec cars run the trip mileage in KM's along with the speedo so if you look at the mileage it will not be miles but is in kms (so 5/8 to get the miles). The cruise control won't function under 30 or over 70mph. If it's an auto the j-spec shift gets a neat power/hold shift button with a kickdown override that pops it into power if you floor it. The standard J-spc dip beam bulbs are crap. You get charged £25 to get a J-spec part number out of Nissan now. Only Tesco insurance seem to treat us kindly is we modify an import 300.

No porn on my site - all good, clean, wholesome tech info ! wink.gif

John, there are numerous differences and the page you looked at doesn't list them all. However, the mileometer on a Jap isn't always in km, it depends on how it's been converted - mine in is miles.

The dash warning lights to vary between series I, II etc

The cruise control range is 'adjustable' with a bit of fiddling.

Additional feedback on the differences welcome - I have some from Blipman that I have yet to include.

What sort of additional premium over standard for modifications from Tesco?

When I asked it seems to be about 5% for each, eg. exhaust, intake. Don't know about more serious stuff though ....

There's also the front washers. The UK Spec has them, the Jap-Spec does not.

Andy. Great list of stuff on the site just wanted to show how imported cars all seem to differ in someways.

How did you get your mileometer to run in miles I was told it couldn't be changed. Salesmen....bah.

What is the fiddling you have to do on the cruise?

The mileometer is part of the conversion. I didn't do mine, but I think it's a box which basically adjusts the number of pulses reaching the speedo, so it display less. If done correctly this mean that clocks, mileometer and odometer all display miles (plus you have to wind the mileometer back from it's km number to an equiv in miles [arguably this is illegal?!? ])

This gives you an 180mph speedo and all you have to do is stick a tiny mph label over the "km/h". Cruise control mods are linked via my site under electrical - think they originate on the Aus site.

Same here.

My fog lamp switch does precisely nothing and the lamps act the front act as side lights.

Is this a series I/II difference?? If so, why bother with a dash switch??

Also, does anyone know how to get in these units cos on of my 'sidelamps' is really weak? I removed the front screws and nothing happens!! They seem to be partitioned too... About 3/4 is one platic lens and 1/4 is a seperate plastic lens...

Any ideas??

The fog lamp switch should operate the front fogs/spots. You can access these lights by removing the indicators and getting to the three 10m nuts on the back. You will probably find 35w H1 bulbs, which can be replaced with UK spec 55w halogens. The screws you have already twiddled are for alignment only. Not sure what the 1/3 partitioned off bit does - nothing I seem to remember. Incidentally, these will also be the sidelights and have a W5W bulbs in each.

If you have a rear fog the switch will either be bodged in somewhere, or maybe wired along with the front fogs.

I think that the glass partioning in the unit is to provide different beam patterms for the sidelamp bulb and the fog lamp bulb.

When I originally got my 300 the monkey who had pdi'd it from the import garage had screwed up the wiring for the halfords crappy fog lamp they had hung under the back bumper into the front fog lamp circuit. Rear fog lamp worked for the MOT but not the fronts.

Hmmm sounds like mine too have been bodged whilst some YTS trainee has fitted a (now removed!) poxy rear fog lamp.

Still wierd though - I'll post a pic if I get round to it, but the main bit of these lamps (the larger (3/4)part of the lamp unit) on mine has seemingly about a 10/12W bulb in and act as my sidelights with nothing in the smaller (1/4) section.

So far been avoiding looking at wiring diagrams but maybe now's the time......

Just to add - some JSpecs come with an explosive device in the passenger footwell that can cheerfully blow off your passengers bollocks /and/or/ get you in trouble with her majesties remover of bombs.

Probably.

Just to clear what Glenn said,

The Jap Z came with a flare under the passenger seat. This must be disposed of correctly. People have has brushes with the law over them cos they are classed as explosives.

Plus if it goes off while in your car, it will fry it to a chrisp.

Stuart

Well mines a jap import and has no rear foglights at all! (and its got an MOT i smell a rat).

I hated the crappy halfords fog lamp so I took it off. Rewired the right hand pair of reversing lamps to the fog lamp wire the dealer had fitted and inserted red plastic tape inside the lenses. Not a beautiful job but damned sight better than what they left me with.

b19rks,

Are you sure that you don't have a hidden switch somewhere and the inner pair of brake lights have been wired as fogs ?

Don't want to be picky but it's actually 6/10. Or if I AM being picky, it's 62/100.

The easiest way to get a quick rough calculation can be done if you have a speedo which reads in kph and mph. If your car has, say 100,000 km on it then if you look at the 100 km reading on the speedo, this will be at the same place as 62 mph. So your car has done 62,000 miles.

Alternatively you can be clever and calculate it in your head. But I prefer the above.

Hope that makes sense.

On the other hand, as 62/100 is 0.62 and 5/8 is 0.625, then I'd say that 5/8 is a good enough approximation as the real conversion factor is 0.6214. Certainly much more accurate than 6/10. tongue.gif
