I got my short shift kit a couple of days ago. It came with instructions that say 2 of the 6 bolts you have to remove are accessed from under the car. Is this true as i have been told you can do it all from the top?

 

The zchicks website doesnt say either!

i did mine from the top, u just need two 10mm spanners and small fingers.

how many bolts did you have to remove in total?

think its about four once you have taken the centre consol out

It's easier than it looks mate took me about an hour and a half. The time consuming bits where using pliers to open the bracket up and lining the bolt hole through the bottom of the new shortshifter. HTH ;)

I did one on my old rover and had to do it all from underneith. Also i had to angle grind the lining out of the old shifter to fit it to the new one! Took me about 3 hours to do the rover and was hoping the z would be easier and done from the top!

 

The instructions I got for the zx say you have to remove 2 bolts from the underneith of the car and I'm hoping to do it without going under the car.

the way i did mine was very easy after reading the info on it i prepped a few things.

 

if you have a 12mm ring spanner with an offset head (slightly bent) then this is great for undoing the one under the retaining head for the pivot ball.

 

undo that one first, then undo the one nut you can see on the front side of the retainer.

 

then grab the thread sticking up so the gearstick is lower and you will see the nut on the left clearly and its easier to get a spanner around it, then on the other side use a micr ratchet with a 12mm socket to undo it, when it gets really loose take out spanner and stick fingers in there, if its right the nut will stay still in your fingers and you can finish undoing it, the nut will be in your fingers and you can take it out. then pull out micro ratchet and bolt then pull gearstick up, turn 90 degrees tilt forward and it will lift out.

 

i will do a good how to pdf and pics when i put mine in , i will do a take apart and re assemble.
