MY oh MY what do i have to do to solve front end shimmy problem

Here we go again, :headvswal

Got my Zed back from Zedworld who fixed dead zed problem (wiring loom problem) and also replaced the driver side steering rod as the ball socket was worn...............But still i have a shaky nose under breaking AAAAAARGH!

Lets list what I have done to solve this so far:-

New dampers

New bushings for Energy suspension jobs (full master kit)

New discs and pads

New upper links

New track rods both sides

New Wheel bearings

Tracking done

Wheels balanced

New tyres

Replaced power steering pump (which i am convinced crapped out due to all the shaking through the steering)

:headvswal :headvswal

The symptoms. The front suspension / steering clunks when i turn left (sometimes)

Under braking from speed the wheel wobbles and there is a noticeable pulsing through the brake pedal and shaking of the steering wheel. The harder I drive the worse it gets.

Anyone...............Any more ideas. I wanna take this thing to the ring but not until its sorted.

Chris

tie bar bolts are good and it has just had new turbo's and gearbox (Ztech) and some minor stuff done at Zedworld. So it is the specialists hands and yet cannot get rid of this problem.......

Think it is deffo something in the steering chain but what?

Chris

I know you said you have had wheels balanced

were you there when they did them?

no excessive amount of weights on them? ie maybe one has a slight buckle/warp as i assume that wasn't ztech who did those? egg in the tyre?

any front to back movement in wheels when jacked up?

maybe the vibration is moving from back to front?

only suggesting daft things as i reckon ztech would have discounted the normal culprits and their expertise is a BIT more than most of us

maybe the ball joint at the bottom of the lower arms.

Pulsing thorugh the brake pedal indicates ABS issues and or discs being out of true, either at the disc or the hub, discs should be checked with a run out gauge.

Have to agree tie/tension rod bolts should be chaecked as well!

Has it ever been involved in a knock? could the car's geometry be out? do/did your tyres wear out quick?

Crappy EBC sportline discs...........warped  :headvswal

How do i know?

Shimmy effect gets worse the hotter they get and both track rods and ball ends replaced.....steering rack good, tension rod bolts good, bushes good etc. etc.

So I now need a new set of new front discs.

And one's that won't bleedin warp !!!!!!!!!!! :(

So EBC sportline discs waste of money stay away etc. Thats EBC sportline discs :(

hold it a minute here mate

I take it you changed the discs and pads in a effort to get rid of the shimmy, if so did the shimmy and knocking go away when you did this , cause it should of if those were the culprit.

take the discs off and do a run out check on your hubs and then do one on your discs as well.

no bud had to go over my memory like a detective an remembered I replaced the old discs coz they were shagged, got myself the EBC kit coz it sounded like good value. Turns out they was junk.

Anyway i am just in USA at the moment and bagged some tasty nismo wheels and a set of nismo S tune suspension so looks like I am gonna go the big brake route now anyway...........

Thanks for the advice guys and now we all know stay away from EBC discs. pads are good (red stuff) but discs are ****

I am having the infernal front judder problem too. I fitted adjustable front upper (camber) suspension links last night and that helped traction and stability but da judders still kick in.

(I used a spirit level to make sure when the car was jacked up it was of equal height within 1mm of both front sides. I then used a

shorter spirit level against the brake discs to aim for neutral camber - Turning the adjustable links so their length changed appropiatly. Ok this is not the desired way to do it but i do think i have got the camber bang on to the very exact turn of the adjustable links. I also greased the pair of upper links very generously with Castrol LM grease).

My front tyres have really uneven wear. I now wonder if the judder which when i got the zed last october was hardly there, but now is really bad is caused by some warping in the tyres.

I have a new pair of Falken 451's ready. Though the front wheel toe may be out and perhaps tension rod or suspension strut bushings need replacing but i think i next best bet is to get the new tyres fitted and balanced.

Front wheel judder - to infinity and beyond - gagh!
