Hi guys,

I have bought a 300zx Twin Turbo with approx 100,000 KPH on the clock (60,000 miles). It should be ready to collect next week and I cant wait :hyper:

However, I have just found out that a work colleague has had two of them and he said they are very unreliable. He said both of his kept braking down and he's a mechanic! :x:

Have you found 300zx's to be reliable?

Thanx

As long as they are looked after, then they'll be as reliable as anyother car on the road. I've had mine for two and half years now, and no major problems.

The biggest thing is never knowing how it's been treated by previous owners, but then that could be the same for any vehicle.

The thing with these cars is that most of those 60,000 miles will not have been driven like your granny. These are performance cars and are highly stressed under load.

If they are looked after then you should have only the usual problems that anyone running a high performance car would have. Is it an import? I've noticed nearly all of them seem to have "60,000" miles on them. Just a coincedence I'm sure.

Mine was an import.

I've had it for two years and haven't spent anything on it that I didnt expect to for a car of this age. (apart from a new ECU wiring loom, which is highly recommended)

my car has never failed to get me to work in the morn, i drive it all year round and cane the living daylights out of it, ive always had small niggly running probs but thtas it

like most cars though, treat them right and they will run right

Hi mate

Yes its a jap import. Arrived last wednesday. Currently awaiting it to be registered in UK and have the rear fogs done etc.

The car looks in excellent condition. Engine sounded sweet and overall was mint. It got an auction grade 4.

However, it has little service history but has had a cam belt change.

I plan to really look after this car, no expense will be spared.

As for your new ECU wiring loom, why do you recommend changing this?

Also, is there anything I need to look out for or is there anything worth replacing? Someone said to change the oil lines to the turbos?

Im not brilliant at mechanics but would love to know how. Im gonna buy a workshop manual and try doing some of it myself, but its hard when you dont have all the tools or garage facilities!

The wiring looms suffer from corroded connectors which can give duff readings to the ECU. You can clean up/replace some of the connectors but the other problem is the turbo heat bakes the wiring loom solid making it difficult to work with. I think the corrosion may be caused by the aluminium bonnet which seems to attract condensation. I messed around with mine but in the end ripped it out and fitted a new one. The car ran like new afterwards.

Dont panic. Check the injector connectors when you get the car. If they are green inside they will need attention along with various others.

Do a search on here for more details

There is quite a lot you can do for servicing yourself. The general problem is that the engine bay has turbo gubbings in so its a squeze. Get subscribed to the club and you will benefit from good advice that is priceless.

Before my zed i never had a car i wanted to spend the time on maintaining, well i had this Alfa Romeo 164 once but needed an exorcist. Last week i invested in a good socket and spanner set from Halfords as part of building up a good set of tools.

don't use him :nelson:

My current one has been solid with all money spent on improvements apart from a hundred odd on a MAF. My old one was a nightmare, blew the engine, rebuilt it, blew it again, sold it on ebay for not a lot! Awesome cars though, like any turbo car of any age, you should have a grand or so in reserve for problems.

Best Money You'll Ever Spend On It!
