How do I get the cog at the front of the oil pump off? (The one that the cam belt runs on - I'm sure it has a proper name). It doesn't matter if it's wrecked as the oil pump is being replaced.

best NOT to use a screwdriver or similar between the oilpump and sprocket to forcefully try to slip it off...8 of 10 times you will damage (crack) the oilpump housing, but in your case I suppose that doesn't matter. :D

 

normal method is heating it with a heater gun and lots of penetrating oil will help it slip right off.

 

if that doesn't work, use a dremel and small chisel to cut the sprocket in half.

as lymon says,the problem is when water runs down there from a leak or waterpump/thermostat removal it sticks the sprocket on,air cutting tool and chisel it off is the only way im afraid then when you fit a new one apply some lithium or copper grease so if you need to remove it in the future,it will come off fine

Thanks for the advice all. Dremel and chisel sorted it. After hammering away at it for a while the feeling of satisfaction when the sprocket split was amazingly high for what should be such a simple job.

 

You can tell I'm a total amateur. I'm just happy when something comes apart :D

 

I've got the engine (almost) totally disassembled now (apart from the dipstick which is stuck fast), so the hard part comes soon - reassembly.
