Hi guys,

The missus has just come in from a horse ride upset. She was riding along and touched a wing mirror from a landrover discovery with her shin, very softly. The wing mirror fell off of the vehicle and two men came running out. It turns out the wing mirror was already broken and had been glued back. He knew how much a new one was (£75) because he'd been looking for scappies to replace it already. He flashed his police badge at her after she argued that it was already broken and didn't see how she should replace it, and threatened to sue her. He says he wants a replacement by tomorrow as he has to use it for work. The glass was still attached (already broken slightly), just the rest on the floor . We appreciate an accident is an accident and should be replaced (I've had it done to my Zed) but this guy is blatently trying to get a new wing mirror for one already broken. Anyone any ideas or have a spare wing mirror  ?

I agree with what you are saying guys, I was livid when she came in and described what had happened. I'm looking at how it would be argued though. End of the day she hit his car and damaged it, arguments about how hard and how much it was already damaged would be her word against theirs (two 'trustworthy' pillars of the community)??

His freelander was parked outside his house by the way, on the pavement as they often get wingmirrors knocked by passing road users (like people on horses). The cheeky f*cker is getting payment for someone elses bump.

I'm trying to stay calm and collected about it all..............

number one he knows its already broke, two it was an accident, three i would sugest to other the cost of same size glass at halfords because thats whats his done, four no one should go around threatning sueing you and finnaly his badge should never been used in them circumstaces, thats omotional blackmale, and because he has, i would go down to the local nick with his reg number and house number and warrent number if you have it and tell them, becuase if he is a police man hell get a telling of, and ,ore than lightly his not and will get done for persanating the police thats got to hurt?

Have you got a keyboard problem?? ;)

Royal, so my understanding is that the mirror was already broken and your wife merely knocked it off? I would say that technically then there has been no road traffic accident in the eyes of the law as she has caused no damage and if that is the case she did not have a legal requirement to exchange details so he doesn't seem justified in producing a warrant card. I would consider reporting the incident and complain to an Inspector at the police station.
