Hi guys,

The missus has just come in from a horse ride upset. She was riding along and touched a wing mirror from a landrover discovery with her shin, very softly. The wing mirror fell off of the vehicle and two men came running out. It turns out the wing mirror was already broken and had been glued back. He knew how much a new one was (£75) because he'd been looking for scappies to replace it already. He flashed his police badge at her after she argued that it was already broken and didn't see how she should replace it, and threatened to sue her. He says he wants a replacement by tomorrow as he has to use it for work. The glass was still attached (already broken slightly), just the rest on the floor . We appreciate an accident is an accident and should be replaced (I've had it done to my Zed) but this guy is blatently trying to get a new wing mirror for one already broken. Anyone any ideas or have a spare wing mirror  ?

If it was glued on, it must have already fell off at least once. He is trying to pull a fast one if you ask me. He is using his position as a police officer to intimmidate your wife. To sue you would must cost him more than £75.

Offer him £10 for a new tub of glue..

I'd say offer half the cost of a new one to be fair bud.

does he admit it was already broken? sounds like a reet to55er

just get one from a scrappers and shove it in his brown eye!!

Write to his boss, simple reaqlly he's trying to abuse his position as a copper.

number one he knows its already broke, two it was an accident, three i would sugest to other the cost of same size glass at halfords because thats whats his done, four no one should go around threatning sueing you and finnaly his badge should never been used in them circumstaces, thats omotional blackmale, and because he has, i would go down to the local nick with his reg number and house number and warrent number if you have it and tell them, becuase if he is a police man hell get a telling of, and ,ore than lightly his not and will get done for persanating the police thats got to hurt?

I would do mate, but he's already looked in the local scappers and couldn't find one.

offer him half to be more than fare if he sued you it would cost him to much money clearly an idiot.I tryed to sue someone for £200 and was told by solicitor not worth it would cost more to sue and no garrantee of winning .good luck just trying it on..

As he has shown his police warrant card, i would now take the stance, that seeing as he has made this matter a police one, you wish it to be dealt with by the police, they of course will not be interested, and the fact you want this made public, maybe enought to shut him up.

Don't know if this helps but the law states that if you damage someones vehicle you only have to repair it to the pre accident condition. That means that if the mirror was held on with glue and tape then that is all you have to do to repair it...The only problem you have is that they are going to say that there was nothing wrong with it before the accident.

Alicia's dad whos in the trade has spoke to him and is getting the replacement tomorrow. Still seems a pi*stake but it could be worse I suppose. He could have insisted on it going to a garage and having it fitted etc. Can't be doing with the stress from a couple of tosse*s over trying to argue for less money, etc. We've got a lot going on at the moment and no time to fight for £30.

Wouldn't mind driving one with a gpmg on the back past past his freelander! :hyper:

It's fraudulant and an outright misuse of power. I'd not stand for it and make a formal complaint to the local station. Don't let him or his position bully you and your wife. It's his responsiblity to keep his car in good working order and if he's glueing his mirror on then IMHO he's not done that. What if at speed it had flown off and hit someone.

i would still go in and make a complaint , at no time should he of used his warrant card, there was no legal right to do so at any time there. as he was off duty and no criminal intent was carried out he had no grounds to do that, if you had gone to the station and spoken to his superior he would have had a *****king and the matter would have had to be dealt with on a civil basis.

that is a clear breach of police procedure full stop, its the so called little things like this that piss me off when it comes to civvy coppers.

I was lead to believe that horses and riders riding horses are virtually immune to claims for compensation in cases of accidents as horses are deemed to have a mind and will of their own,and therefore their actions are unpridictable. Therefore in this case if the horse lurched towards the car and broke the wing mirror, then basically they should try suing the horse which could be classed as unrealistic. Of course I might be totally wrong, but over the years I.ve known 2 cases of friends having cars damaged by horses and they had to claim on their own insurance.

Offering half the new cost is more than fair IMO.

This tosser chose to flash his warrant to intimidate Mrs Royal; furthermore he already admitted the mirror had previously been broken.

How did the damage occur? Was he overtaking your Mrs - if so he is at fault for not giving her enough room so tell him to feck off and sue. Chances are he won't bother.

Offer to pay for just the glass and put it in the condition prior to the accident. If he doesn't like it tell him to feck off anyway. He won't sue, he's just trying to scare your Mrs.

Good luck mate.

I think Miss Royal may have messed up a bit too as the bloke got nasty when the missus pointed out that it was already broken so the missus said she wasn't going to give him her details as it was already broken. He then got out his police ID and said she wasn't allowed to walk away without giving details and he'd sue her etc, etc. She has public liability insurance on the horse but the excess is 100 odd quid anyhow so no point claiming. I'm not sure where it stands as on the one hand he is taking the p*ss as it was already broken, but on the otherhand he could say that it needs to go to a garage, he needs a hire car, etc. Fortunately he's accepted the replacement from her dad and will fit it himself. I think if we complained then he would bring up the fact that she was going to walk off without giving details and make a big thing out of it.

I would go round there & tell the prick to fook off as HE had fooked it up & he should replace it..........If that does not work punch the coont on the nose & send mac & the boy's round.....What a prick.

I aint read it all. BUT! tell the local police station that the b'strd is being a bully with hes warrant card and tell them to fook off. If you can proove the mirror was already broken. He should know better than that its illegal to break somthing then try and blame someone else for it. COOOONT. Fookin Old bill stretching their authority to intimidate someone is well naughty.

I can't believe you're letting this twat get away with what he's done! I think a situation like this would have been best dealt with by telling him to sling his hook there and then. Let him sue/chase/arrest you for knocking off his already-knackered held-on-with-sticky-tape wing morror if he thinks he can. What a proper tool. Definitely make a complaint about him to the police.
