Orange thing infront of auto stick!!

ok, ok, this is probably a dumb blonde moment but what the hell is that black plastic stick infront of the auto gear stick? with the orange sticker on it that you can push in?

 

My mate who has one as well does not know what it does either and my curiosity is killing me!!!!
