What causes my zx to smell strongly of petrol when idling? Sometimes it really stinks.

leaky fuel hoses .. go round and tighten all that you see. if not get the fuel hose kit off of smithy. it take away 4 hoses and replaces them with just 2

Common problem, check all your fuel lines under the bonnet from the fuel filter to the injector rail, tighten jubilee clips.

There is also a small pipe under the front of the throttle cover, between the linkages that can leak.

Look into investing in Smithys Fuel line kit http://www.smithys-place.co.uk/engenh.php

there is also under the throttle body that i found today looks like a pig to get to, so im gonna wait till i clean my tb's before i do it

Thanks for the heads up. Smithys sounds like a decent investment. Sometimes the smell is so strong people walking past the car comment on it - kinda embarassing. Cheers.

yep i had that also, other people smelling it, more than likely its going to be the small length of pipe under the throttle cable assy.

i re did mine and no more petrol smell, when i started the car i could see the pipe end getting wet. i also changed my fule rails for smithys pipe kit, its a bargain and does its job. no more petrol smell since doing that, i have gone round the connections since and given them a little tweak to make sure they are still tight.

Thanks for the empathy. The smell makes me feel like I'm sitting in a bomb. Is the car safe to drive? I really dont want my pride to go up in a blaze.

take the throttle cover off and y ou will be able to get to the pipe, each end is a clamp, mine was loose on one end (right) so i moved it over slightly also to make sure the pipe was not split. luckily it wasnt and i just re tightened it up. also to keep the clamp facing you while you tighten it get a piece of cable and loop it and then place over clamp and pull towards you while tightening it up that way the screw always faces you and makes tightening in future easier. will up pic showing how.

the pic showing the cable over the clamp is just to show you what i mean thats not the clamp under the throttle mech..
