I have had my car drop into safety boost twice in the last couple of days. Now I have checked the ecu and got a code 34 response.

What I want to know is: whether the ecu stores the code when the sensor is doing its job and sensing detonation, or is it that the sensor has a fault and in actual fact the car is running fine?. I hope that makes sense. There is no sound to imply that the engine is detting - its sounds nice and smooth with no rattling.

Can someone clear up my confusion?

Cheers.

faulty det sensor circuit.

it does NOT mean its detting!!

Thanks Paul, thats what I thought but wanted to be 100% sure before considering doing the resistor bypass.

yes as mentioned, sensor fault and not an indication of detting.

but if you have a standard chip, then it will be in safety boost.

Bet the Det sensor is knackered!!! Had this after fitting my new engine, plenum had to come off just to get to it and replace the old one... Big job but my car never goes into safety mode when warmed up now after fitting a new sensor.... :)

The cars running a JWT chip with 1.2mm boost jets, normally runs perfectly happy at around 12psi.

a real pain to change the dett sensor alot of stuff to take off the car get someone who knows the zeds well, it'll save you time and money.

i'm installing jets the same as yours how differant from stock would you say your zed is

see ive always woundered, what actually happens when you do get Det?

If the sensor is there to detect it and it doesn't actually put you in safety mode then realisticaly what good is it? what exactly does it do if you do have det???

As said earlier I am hitting 12psi on my aftermarket gauge and the difference is very noticable, the car picks up much quicker especially on a rolling start. I do have 1mm jets as well but I am increasing the boost gradually to ensure nothing goes pop.

has the JWT chip got a det map? if it hasnt then the det sensor wont be doing anything anyway.

The car is definately going into safety boost, my aftermarket gauge is showing exactly 7psi and the car is physically slower on acceleration. Maybe the JWT does have a det map then? Its one of the chip that Danny used to sell before he started doing his own.

on a std ecu with a working det sensor, on detonation it will switch to a separate map with retarded ignition and more rich fueling, it also closes the boost solenid to limit the boost

almost!!

an aftermarket chip with no det maps will not retard the ignition timing.

it will still put the car into safety boost. if you have jets then you will get safety boost.

if you have a boost controller then these will bypass the wastegate solenoids & you will still get full boost!

So what error message will you get then??

And how much boost would you then be running?

almost, part 2 ;)

>> an aftermarket chip with no det maps will not retard the ignition timing.

wrong, it will retard ignition, no matter what chip you have, unless the knock routines in the code were disabled on purpose (afaik there's no chip around that has this) or when you have bypassed the det. sensor.

Once the ECU detects knock it will retard timing 1 degree.

if knock still occurs, it will retard the timing another degree and it will continue doing this for a few times. If at that point the engine's still knocking it will revert to the safetyboost maps and it will turn down the boost (unless you have a EBC) to save the engine from damage.

JWT Chips still have the safety boost map and that remains unchanaged from the original Eprom... It will still retard the timing and keep you at 0.4 bar unitil the engine has warmed up then give full boost depending on what size jets your running... As normal if the knock sensor circuit is open then you will remain in safety boost....

Well, have now done the resistor bypass to see if that solves the problem. Will give the car a run tonight to check. Fingers crossed that it works!

Thanks for all the advice guys - I'll post the outcome later.

Wife had literally just arrived home from a 3 day business trip in Amsterdam. She'd have cut my *****x off if I'd have turned around and said 'hello dear, I'm off out now - see you later' :wack: :D

Of course I DO wear the trousers in our house... :x:
