hi steve.my hids do this as well.never sure if its a fault or a characteristic of the lights.almost like having a dodgy flourescent tube for a headlight.mine will stay on fine once ive turned them off then back on again.my old man has exactly the same set up as me but he reckons his dont do this.??

No I do'nt have this problem but the bloody things are condensating up again :headvswal :headvswal Even thoughh I chucked in a nice size bag of silca gell in each one and used extra sealent. :headvswal :headvswal Looks like I am going to have to take out and reseal for the 10th time :headvswal :headvswal

one off mine does it on start up ffs must be the ballast unit

Sorry for the slight hijack.. Are HID's worth the upgade ?? Cause my lights are rubbish.

Yes mate definatly, they are an incredible difference I feel a lot safer in it at night now where as before I used to drive it like a granny at night as I could ony see about 15' in front of me the darkness. The H.I.Ds I have are on Ebay the Halo ones. HTH

Kewl thanks for the info .. Do you have the dip and main beam kits.. I was just gona go for the main beam kit as there's bugger all on the roads up here at night most of the time..

Craig

I have the H3C main beam as I do'nt need to use the H1 full beam anymore as main beam is excellent, but I do'nt flash people anymore as it can fook up the HID lights and I cannot be arsed to wire in the relay.

I got the 'Ebay HID kit from oz' and the passenger side one i fitted failed so it has a normal lamp. Have not got round to check the ballast unit yet cos im a lazy arse.

General HID note:

HID's should operate just like normal headlights - ie, they shouldn't be flickering on/off. If they do then there is a fault (could be ballast, could be wiring loom, etc).

This upgrade is definitely worth spending the time and money on. However, I would advise anyone switching to HID's to take their existing headlights apart, clean them thoroughly (ie behind the lens as well as the glass) and only then put in the HID's. If you're running HID's behind dirty headlight lens/glass you will cut the effective light output considerably, cause glare to oncoming traffic and basically not gain as much as you would otherwise. Whilst the unit is stripped also replace the alignment wheels as it is very likely you'll need to realign the headlights once the HID's are in.

There are various kits available (both through flea-bay and normal retailers) but you do get what you pay for. Some cheap kits have ballasts and igniters separately from the bulb, others incorporate the igniters in the ballast unit.

The HID kits I sell are currently rated as one of the best available after market. I'm currently supplying them to Saab franchise dealers and as of mid April will also be the main supplier to Lamborghini UK and the Lamborghini owners club :) The X5 kits aren't the cheapest ones out there but they are truly plug-n-play and the installation is completely reversible in minutes. No alterations are required.

Hope the above info is useful for someone.

So are all these ones that keep switching off the same brand?

I'm wanting to fit HID's very soon but don't want even more agro with lights afterwards!

My original HID's (low beam from Outlander Motorsport) start dull then brighten up in seconds my Hi beam ones however take some time and flicker on start-up.......Switching between hi and low beam is therefore not as good as it should be. I was thinking of reversing the fit and also I have been told the battery has to be in tip-top nick as the initial drain for HID's is mammoth. So not sure  I think I will get the Z-centre guys to look at them when i return for some other stuff doing. (haven't forgot guys)

My Missus's RX8 has HID's as standard and of course there is no flicker whatsoever just a couple of seconds to get to full brightness..........

Having said all of that i can say that now having had the HID experience I would not even drive a performance car at night without them and when you get them done do both Hi and low beam you will not regret it.

I found on my fleabay ones must have good battery, if not/or engine not running then ficker.

Reading this post, I have some ways for you.

I got the problem and I found several factors :

the ballasts themselves

the bulbs

the wiring

the fuses

First, how did you wire your ballasts (directly from the battery or from the headlight wires themselves ) ?

For sure, wiring from the bat directly will give you better results.

Originally I powered the ballasts from the OEM wires of each headlight. It works fine but you need to "sandpaper" the two 15A fuses , the contacts must be perfect, not corroded (that's very important). I also notice it depends on the brand of the fuse itself, then the best it to upgrade the fuses for 25A 30A versions (it will hurt nothing if your wiring is well made). I don't aspeak about continuous current drawn but current peak !

Secondly, some ballasts are sensitive to voltage drops (when you switch on other stuff).

I had the right ballast which switched off as soon as I switched on the main lights (fuse factor).

I also noticed the headlight wires are not the same gauge between left en right (stupid Nissan).

Then, for some secure reasons (having a ballast switching off while driving is disappointing), I wired the ballasts direclty from the battery. I think this is better but sometimes, the problem still occured.

Then I suspected the bulb itself, and effectively some bulbs are deffective (but lights fine) in a way the ballast enters in a safe mode and switchs off the power. Some ballasts are more or less sensitive to this.

I have several bulbs in stock and I did a mix which works fine now.

You will also notice sometimes the light output has not exactly the same color between driver and passenger side. That may be due to the 300zx reflectors themselves or the bulbs (I assume both bulbs are 6000K, not 5000 and 6000, obviously)

You have to check the offset of the bulb glass in the socket, that's very important. If your 2 bulbs have a different offset (which makes the diffraction/reflection different), one side will be more yellowish. Again the solution, mix the bulbs to find a good pair.

Sometimes HID stuff is not so easy .... (1 month of investigation)

Ask some details if you want.
