Well I believe my engine is running lean (so Datascan says anyway) what can I do? Is it a problem?

Martyn, Indicator should move from lean to rich somewhat randomly through the rev range

I believe the only true indicator of Lean/Rich can be obtained with a Wideband O2 sensor.

put more petrol in the tank.!! ;)

On my datascan, the Lean/Rich O2 sensor is just stuck at one end of the dial or the other (usually rich) until the engine is warm. Once the engine has come out of cold start mode, the closed loop mode seems to take over and the needle zooms from one side to the other as you would expect.

Are you checking it when fully warmed up?

So ...... what's the mpg like ? If the O2 sensors always show lean, the the ECU will try to compensate by running rich and your mpg will be poor.
