Hi fellaz

Right, I've been thinking about gettin a small sea fishing boat (like the one below, but hopefully better)

for a few years now. I always been put off because I never knew how or

where I can launch from, where its safe to take it so as not to run into

rocks etc... rules for coming into a river from the sea etc etc etc I would

eventually (once confident) be taking the kids with me, so wanna be real

safe and not smash into hidden rocks or worse still a ferry lol

Does anyone here know how to find all these things out???

Cheers guys

Mike

Basically you need to do some research into various coastal regions. Where ideally would you like to launch the boat from? You could first off start out on a fresh water lake as opposed going straight to sea.

If you've never done anything like this before, it might be wise to do as basic sea survival course. All nautical colleges will offer this.

I've worked at sea and work with ships now, shorebased, so feel free to post some questions and I'll try and answer them. I don't know anything about the fishing industry though, but can get hold of most types of marines information.

You're best off also getting some of the admiralty publications. Mariners Handbook is the best to be starting off with. Gives you a brief insight into shapes and signals (aka lights and bouyage), weather patterns, basic seamanship and chart reading/plotting (Navigation). You really need to familiarise yourself with these articles before getting behind the helm of the above.

But again, how much knowledge you require will be dependant on where you want to end up and the size of vessel. But basic navigational skills are a must and this will encapsulate basic rules of the sea (collregs).

Just fly over 'em :D

Looking into it myself at the moment but my brother took his boat pilots license to know what he's doing for real.

You also need a radio license to do it safely and properly.

any decent boat will have a radar system m8

and if not you NEED one, can see most things for miles

and also see's whats below PLENTY deep enough to keep you out of danger

Get the longest stick you can find  Try the boat out in the bath , if it takes yer balls off.Get one with a shallower draft.

you would trust me?? LOL

sure that wouldn't be a problem when i know what i'm doin

oh and have a boat lol. will only be smallish boat tho LOL

you also need an echo sounder, tells you how deep the water below you is also picks up any rocks, can also be used for seeing the fish you wanna catch. :)

what about a fancy dress fishing party you could all go like this

well the boat above is i believe a 17ft pilot a good fishing boat with a cathedral hull

Know ya boats jason??? LOL

You NEED to do the RYA dayskipper course. I would suggest both practical and theory. You NEED to have the right kit, i.e flares b(not baggy trousers..), VHF, GPS etc. You need to understand the tides, depths, how to read a chart etc as the last thing you want is to go somewhere and run agound because you underestimated the draught of your boat...

Any Q's, just ask as I am qualified in both...
