Hi,

I've got a 1990 Fairlady Z NA Short Wheel Base manual. Last year one of the standard back boxes went and I was quoted 13 hundred quid by Nissan for a new one. After loads of phoning round (no one seemed to be able to get hold of a system for the 2 seater) I eventually found someone that could make up a complete system for my Z for around 600 pounds, they are called Powerflow. The power gain was good 'cos the whole system was 'straight through', the trouble was that it was unbelievably loud (4 x 3" DTM pipes that acted like trumpets as well). I decided to get some new boxes in an attempt to make it slightly quieter so I got a couple of Simons baffled racing boxes and they have done the trick. The trouble is that the car feels much slower than it ever has now.

Have I made a mistake by messing around with the Powerflow exhaust system?

Will getting an upgraded air filter help? If so which should I get?

Is there anything else I could do to improve the performance apart from buying a TT?

I hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Andy

Do you still have the cats ?

Problem with NA's is that they need the cats to have enough backpressure or you will lose lots of low end torque (you will gain some power in the 5000+RPM range though) and it will be very loud.

On a TT the turbo's provide the backpressure.

There aren't many things that you can do to improve the performance of your NA.

Most upgrades make it just a little more responsive, but are not worth the money.

Except for NOS perhaps..

Thanks for the reply, I do still have the cats. Is it worth getting a upgraded air intake though? I've heard I can get a new ECU, does this make much difference. Who should I get one from?

Cheers,

Andy

Hey Andy.

Anders is correct in saying that The Backpressure from the Stock Cats will aid the NA in the low to mid range torque Dept.

However on any car too much backpressure retards performance, If your New Back Boxes are causing a disruption in the Air Flow you could be increasing backpressure, altho it is a long way down the system so i would hesitate a guess in that the New boxes unless really really restricitive or hugeyl incompatible with your Exhaust i would say that isn't the problem.

You need another exhaust go mail order from the states you will save money usually even with shipping and Handeling.

If you are still having performance problems, try and be more specific, But gettin the timing checked and optimized as well as full service is a good start, specially if you are having Hesitation probs, if it seems worse than that get a compression test done and see what that yeilds.

As Lymon mentioned MODS for the NA aren't too cost effecitve. A Light weight racing pulley and Air Filter arre about your best bet. For less than 300 quid you should see about a 20 - 30HP gain. which aint too bad.

Other than that 550 dollars gets you a 100shot of N20 which will put you in the ball park of Stock TT performance for a small amout of time.

Air-intake (or POP-charger) in combination with exhaust gives a liitle bit more power in the higher revs, but you probably lose some in the lower (at least I did...)

Forget about the ECU...I've got a JWT-ECU and it's pretty worthless for a NA...I didn't feel ANY difference.

Get an UD-pulley instead..cheaper and noticable.

Which air intake would be best to go for for my car?

Car any mechanic fit a UD pulley?

Cheers,

Andy

I would go with the Blitz intake, Chea, nice looking, Splash guard (i think). Luke @ the Z center does a nice one where you don't have to reposition the MAF which is nice, it is a little more expensive tho i think.

As far as UD pulley install, it is easy enuff to do, altho some places will charge you a fair bit for the work, I would recommend you do the job yourself as it gives a good grounding for more complex stuff, You will need 3 new drive belts as well as the diameter of the pulley is now smaller, Some pulleys come with the belts some do not. Have a look at SGP racing in the states.

Hey Johnny what are the chances of you stocking up on some UD pulleys (like ASP or Unorthodox ) for us poor Pulleyless UK crew :o)

One of the most important "upgrades" which most people seam to forget, happens to be free. Have you had your timing properley checked so that it's spot on. If it were just 2deg out you'd loose a noticeable amount of power.
