I've tried the above, no joy! I may take you up on messenger later if you are on when there are no decent programmes on TV!

if you are using a third party firewall then disable it then try again, using the network setup wizzard is the easiest way bud

Limited or no connectivity is usually when windows can't pick up an address off of a DHCP server. If you are just networking the computers for file sharing and they both show this you shouldn't have a problem as they will both automatically set address ranges that are compatible and will talk to each other.

If you networking to share an internet connection on one of the computers you need to make sure it is set as a shared connection then the laptop should pick up an address from the other computer and be able to use its internet connection.

A router is a good way of doing it as it hides your computers behind the routers address and has the added benefit of extra security.Dave

Tried all those without joy, thanks.

You'll tend to find (from setting up small networks myself) pcs connected together on dhcp will NOT automatically assign addresses.

You'll need something like the following setup:

1. Right click "My Computer" locate the bit where you can change the workgroup and call it something like "OURHOUSE" on both of them

2. Now if you want to share your internet and its service pack two just run the network steup wizard on the one you want to share the connection. Usually easier than trying to set it up.

3. Set the ip address of desktop pc to 192.168.1.1, subnet off 255.255.255.0 then on pc two set the ip to 192.168.1.2, subnet to 255.255.255.0 (by right clicking the network connection and selecting properties then selecting the tcpip and click properties)

If this

doesn't work pm me and i'll send you some screenshots to back it all up

I looked at this and it then asks for preferred DNS server address and alternate DNS...

dns is for when it has to locate an internet/naming address so you'll want 192.168.1.1 for the laptop, no need for an alternate, the desktop should be blank or if you have to put something in put 127.0.0.1 (Home) hence the sad geek tshirts that say "There's no place like 127.0.0.1" :D

I assume your router also has a built in modem???

I then assume that you can get onto the router from a laptop and cable, and can then get onto the internet ok?

If this is the case and it is just the PC that is having issues then I would look to make sure the NIC is installed ok. Make sure the card is set up for DHCP as anything else is a pain...I would not use static for a PC...

Now I have reconnected wireless router via ethernet to PC and connected to internet! Now got to get it to connect wireless!

Hold on a minute, think i must have missed the bit where you mentioned a router lol

So the net is adsl or cable?

how many ports does the router have on the back?

is the laptop plugged in via a wire or via wireless?

I believe it DSL. The router only has one port and the laptop is working wireless.

The PC is working via ethernet but I can't seem to get it to connect to the router wireless.

I originally connnected the wireless router to the PC via ethernet and network card, however I now have a wireless card for the PC and I want to connect wireless. I need the ethernet to plug into XBox.

right, now i get you! sorry matey. Got my wires crossed then :D (no pun intended)

Right so via ethernet on dhcp the desktop connects to the internet right? so there's no issue with the connectivity of the router to the net so it must be something wrong with the pc setup.

When you stick the card on dhcp does it bring up a list of wireless networks?

Have you got the same WEP key on the PC as you have on the laptop?
