Well, I've not had a lot of luck with my heap of shit. It's kinda taken another turn for the worse.

Whilst the engine had been bodged at some point along the line before I bought it, the replacement engine I bought last month is also ****ed.

Did a compression test today and one of the rear cylinders is also down at around 50PSi.

Is there anything remotely good about these engines? Is it worth all this hassle and agro? I'm beginning to think otherwise.

Sure, I knew what I was getting myself into when I bought the thing, but this is taking the piss now. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Had a moment of madness and nearly stuck the thing up on here for spares or repair.

I certainly wish to high heaven that I'd NEVER bought the one that I have now.

I paid good money for the tidiest one I could find and people ride around in £2,000 examples and have trouble free motoring after driving them hard.

sorry about your troubles. but as for me i wouldn't put a second hand engine in as people are saying the cars are 15 years old, so if you get a rebuild by a good garage it will last for ages.

Its not just the engine....which was originally for sale on here. Its the whole friggin car. Its been nothing but troube since I bought it.

s*it sorry to hear your having trouble again Si your zed is the cleanest standard zed ive seen hope you get it sorted with as little hassle as possible good luck bud

Feel your pain mate. Ive not had any big problems like engine failure, But i also paid more than i knew was the current rate. And ive had lots of small niggly jobs now ive got an oil leak that just seems to leak like a tap and ive not even driven it for 2 months !! looks possibly like rear main oil seal

I to wonder if its worth the hastle ive owned dozens of cars some were shit some wer expensive, but this one seems to need more maintenance than any of my others !!

The pleasures of owning a well made mass produced Japanese made Car.

So did I mate. Paid £5k for mine.

Si, gutted to hear this. Reading your posts is making me itchy to get rid of mine... and it's basically fine, but if I had to get a new engine... I dunno. Wouldn't be very happy that's for sure. Even with mine it needs the clutch and prop-shaft bearing replacing (I've got the parts already, just need to get it booked in), and that's all just really standard wear and tear. Whatever happens, I hope you get it all sorted out.

To be fair I think all performance cars are a bit like this: expensive to put right when they go wrong... as to whether or not they go wrong as often as the zed I don't know. I did find myself thinking "Why didn't I buy a Supra?" the other day, what with Toyota being supposedly extremely reliable... however then I saw one and looked at a few pictures of them and realised it was because they are in fact ugly, dated, and have a horrible interior (despite the mystique they still have in my mind - apologies to any Supra owners BTW)... oh yeah, and there aren't that many really good examples around. The zed looks like a car from its era (early 90s), but it looks like a cool and stylish car from its era, and that's part of why I like it: retro and stylish, but not really dated.

My advice is: forget about it for the weekend, just relax, go out and have some fun, and worry about it next week. You'll then have a much better perspective on it whatever you decide to do. At the end of the day it's been in the state its in for quite a while now so a couple of days extra won't make much difference.

Anyway, hope you get it all sorted out OK.

Cheers,

Bart

sorry to hear of your troubles mate.. i've had mine a few months now and made a bee line for here when i was in the market for one.. found one in the shape of Gaz's and bought that, had 4k worth of receipts, drove well was a generally spot on engine.. paid more then i could have spent, but was happy doing this for the right car with reams of history..

anyway, if the ebay engine was described wrongly make an issue and get ur iney back deffo, as for the trader, see what happens, they may help u especially as they come on here, them helping you would only do them good i believe..

API only do rebuilds on the customers engine now as the quality of the used engines coming from Japan has dropped - according to an email I recieved from them this afternoon.

I have had to have recon engine and turbos for mine but it all comes with a 12 month guarantee. Ive had to wait 2 months for the priviledge but then if they are warrantying it for 12 months theyve got to make sure its 100% first.

I gotta say Si, you have been unlucky and I hope the traders concerned can sort this mess out, even better if they can do it between themselves and you get your car back on the road, sorted. As for the cost of ownership, any performance car will be costly to maintain, even ordinary family cars can be expensive when it comes to putting them into garages, I know, I do a fairly high annual mileage and get through tyres quite quick, which on my Laguna are Michelin HiLoads 17x225's and come in at £156 each. The 17x265 Avon ZZR's on the back of my Zed cost £117 each. I just think that Zeds are either 'Good' or 'Bad' examples, which is why it is normally better to buy one from someone in the club who has owned it for some time, and thus proven it.

Si sorry to hear its still causing you trouble if theres anything i can do to help mate gimme a shout.
