Hi, I have sort of been offered a pair of R34 Turbos. Question, how hard are they to make fit and are they worth the effort?

92' Jap import SWB TT Manual.

Thanks.

I'm sure somebody's asked that before one time and that the answer was that there's no point. One of the jedi will come on and answer I'm sure. Turbos are designed for particular engines so thats probably why. ie too big equals lots of lag, too small equals less top end. Zeds have two smaller ones to give very little lag but still plenty of power. Try a search.

I have read about a Z in Oz running 500bhp or so on T28's, which I understand is what are fitted to R34's. T28 being a direct replacment for T25's, as I understand it.

Hence my question. As for them not being designed for the Z, (Royal) well, not sure what to say. But thanks anyway.

OK, thanks, but why?

Well for a start they wont just bolt on, you are going to need fabrication work to get them to fit, now if they produced tons of power then maybe worth the hassle however....................................

Ask yourself how much power a stock R34 throws out?;)

OK, just trying to understand.

As for how much can an R34 make. My son has an R33 GTR, running standard tubs but a few other bits and he ran an 11.6 at the Pod. OK, he was running too much boost to be safe, as in 1.3bar. Have no idea what BHP he had but to run an 11.6 was very good.

hi mark, not sure about the answer to the turbo question but i'll wager if he ran an 11.6 he isnt running bog standard turbos... wont stake my life on it but those sort of times come with at least uprated steel turbos i would have thought, altho the 1.3 bar may well be the key factor here...

as an example a friend of mine has a R32, about 450 - 500 bhp, steel turbos, hes a stunning driver and VERY experienced, and his best time ever is an 11.8 i believe... the 32 is ighter as well so i;d guess his turbos may not be stock...

the above could be complete *****x tho.. lol..

does your lad have aftermarket injectors, ecu etc mark??

Hi Tony, def stabdard tubs, we have a part of one of the ceramic wheels that came out of the exhaust, lol. Spec is a little uncertain but what we do know is; Greddy inlet pipes & filters, Trust FMIC, Blitz dual SBC, Kakimoto large downpipes and straight thru pipes, one from each tub all the way to the back, ECU.

The rest of the car has lots of bits too but the only help towards the 1/4 mile time would/might be the Tein coilovers with EDFC, we think the rear diff might be different, and its running 18" BBS, 265 tyres (all round as its 4wd). New OS Giken twin plate clutch.

And just to add some "spice" to the discussion he is running Nangkang tyres. 265/35/18 @ £82.00 each. And he has just told me for the fast run he ran a peak of 1.5 bar.

His first ever run, and I mean first ever for him ever was 12.6

So, back to the topic, these are ceramic tubs in an engine with not many mods. An R34 has ball bearing tubs and steel internals ( I think) and it can make some very good BHP. So fitted to a Z with the right "other" bits, seems like it "could" be a good idea, without spending thousands. This is the question.

In passing. One of the first things many do to a 200sx (S13) is fit a T28 in place of a T25 for usefull power gains.

Sorry bud i was only on for a minute so a quick answer was it ;)

A few others have said on here but basically yes they are T28 based and are roller bearing so very quick spool up but have ceramic blades which are prone to going bye bye's and you can run 1.15 bar of boost on them so yes they will out perform a zed turbo but your looking at about 400rwhp with r34 turbos and when you consider that there a different fitment so fabrication to the manifold/turbo is needed, you would need 5 bolt dowpipes etc etc

So its just not worth it when you can buy some zed specific turbos which will do the same job without all the hastle of the R34 turbos
