Trying to get my rear and 3/4 windows tinted (20%)

tint is already on but poorly done.

Took it to one company and after cancelling the first time, the second time he decided to put summit like 8 miles on my car then didnt have time to tint it

Took it to another lad who had a go but cant remove existing tints - He said it'll have to be scraped off which will damage rear demister. :(

Whats the maximum %age tint you can have on the front windows and windscreen?

30% tint on front sides (70% light transmission) no tint is legal on the front screen

I removed the tins off my Japanese import really easily. People suggest a hairdryer to heat it up first, but I did it in warm weather so didn't need the hairdryer. You can practice on the rear side windows - just find a corner of the tint and carefully lift it. It tends to come off in biggish bits, and afterwards you can remove the glue residue with white spirits. Also, the rear screen was as easy, and no scraping involved, and the rear demist was un-affected.

I'd enquired at my locat tint place and he wanted £60 and couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't damage the rear screen demist. With hindsight I presumed he was just covering himself as it was reall an easy job...

Good luck

Jack

Easy to remove!

Just gently remove a little bit to give you a start then pull firm but not too much pressure otherwise it will tear.

Use paint thinners to remove glue it will be alot easier than using white spirit.

and if u get any tricky bits of glue left get a razor blade and scrape it off, really aint hard to take off at all, its only just like sellotape! (maybe a bit thicker!) and putting it on yourself really isnt as hard as it sounds, long as u do it somewhere clean with no wind.

I was put onto this bloke by another member on here: Mr Tinter

He charged me £180 to do the whole back of my volvo estate and he done a really great job and he came to my house to do it. At that price it really aint woth doing it yourself. Paul got it spot on. Mr tinter wont do front windows.

MMM? Tint £20 4mtrs Professional grade,teflon Squeegee £3.99,craft knife 50p/£1,stanley blades,water and detergent,Spray bottle,bucket,paper towels,thinners and of course your Time.

Seems worth Doing it yourself to me! :)

Thinking about tinting my rear screen as the tailgate is off. Has anyone bought film big enough for the rear screen. Only film I can find is 72cm x whatever length. Any links to suppliers?

cheers

5 years warrenty and he knows what hes doing. unless you know exactly what you are doing it isnt worth doing it yourself as you will no doubt make a mess of it. Proof in the fact that Jay just did exactly that? I aint arguing that its cheeper to do it yourself of course it is. but if you value your car then pay the price it looks much easier to do than it acctually is. IMO of course. :D

I was Shown how to do it by a Windows tinter in Southampton! :D

It easy Mate but Everyones different.

Ive tinted 7 cars in the last 2 years and results very good and i get my tint off of a Reputable Window tinter at Discount Price.

Its all down to personal preferance really.

If you have the time and patience anyone can learn how to do it. ;)

Normally its done in overlapped sections as the screen is curved.

Dont get me wrong mate. I understand exactly where you are coming from. But you must agree that it aint a two minute job and you do really need to have a bit of practice which is going to cost money but yes if you are that way then DIY.

Well Practice Makes Perfect as They Say :D

I just think of something else i could spend that £200 on :D ;)

agree with vini.

its the difference between your windows looking "OK" or perfect.

i agree, they can take ages to perfect, and can be a right tw@t especialy the tailgate, plus a good pro can do it in one piece, mine was done in japan before i bought it, and i have to say they were the best quality tints ive ever seen(until i got pulled  b@stards  )

plus pros use much better quality film.

agree with vini.

Also depends how much of a perfectionist you are! I never do work thats just OK.

But then not everyone's like me!

I watched the bloke doing it and he did make it look easy. If you are going to have a bash at it then the biggest secret is to shape the film to the exact size of your glass back to front on the outside of the window with a hair dryer get all the bubbles out and get it spot on smooth. then you spray the inside with detergent/water then remove the backing and apply the film on the inside. it should be the exact size needed. once on you cant hang about as the spary will soon dry up. then after application you should allow 2 - 3 days before you operate the windows or heated rear screen (if they are the type).....As I said on a car that has the potential to show at meets????? I wouldnt.

GOOD LUCK

You might not (Vini)but i don't see why others can't try to tint there own windows or learn how to you dont exactly need a Degree.

It will save you lots of money if you can achieve an excellent job and if you look on the web i am sure you can find Good instructions on how to tint your own car!

Come on its not exactly Rocket science :)

It 's all down to the individual but these can be expensive cars to run and any money you can save is a Bonus no mater what it is you would be paying out for as long as the job is done correctly and the outcome of the job is perfect-(Practice make's Perfect!!).

I believe thats one of the points of joining an Owners club! Is to able to get the right advice and save money and learn new thing's.

Alot of people think you have to be a professional just to achieve a perfect job i think this is Rubbish.

You can be self taught or have little knowlege and still end up with excellent results with patience and plenty of practice.

I originally Worked in the Motor Trade years ago and i have the advantage of having a lot of skills from the trade so i have that advantage when owning any motor Vehicle!

I was a member of the Ford Cortina 1600E Club 12 years ago and most of the Members on there were not Scared to tackle any Job on there cars It was a challenge and any one who was worried about tacklng a Job in the fear of Bad results or failing to complete the Job were given the right advice and Encouraged to do the job themself to save money.

My Point is there are enough members on this Club that have experiance they can share with others and there should be some encouragement to help others tackle these jobs themselves should they wish to.

Whether its a an OK! job Or PERFECT! Job is down to personal Preference!

After all if every job was Passed to a Professional Everytime due to being too scared to tackle the job concerned We would not be able to Keep these cars on the Road.:)

I am not getting personal with anyone on Here or trying to start any personal Fight's. I am trying to state a Fact and Give others on here Some Encouragement! :D

I agree leave it to the pros trying to find a dust free and wind free area is hard outside .Mine came over from japan with film on the rear screen and rearquarter lights .But the rear window had done in 4 strips that overlaid each other causing a dark stripes about 3mm down the rear screen.I was thinking about doing iy myself but once i brought the film and made a right hash of it you might aswell get someone who does it every day. I had mine redone they removed old film and re tinted for £200.World of ice done it in colchester they have a bloke come in they use very good job he works for main dealers doing bmw and mini tints for cars that havent been ordered tinted from the factory.Nothing looks worse than bubbles in the film.thanks taff.

ive done tinting before, and over the years i have improved, the last couple of cars i had people were really impressed with the job i'd done but the zed came from japan with the factory tints and i tell you what it made my old cars look shite. personally and just pay someone in future...... :D

If you have bubbles in the film use a sewing needle and prick them at the centre of each bubble, then smooth them out with a tinting squeegee.

Only prick each one once!

If you still have problems with bubbles after doing this use a hairdryer on them the tint will shrink and will take any imperfection out. Dont let the tint get too hot though!
