retrim advice again

Sorry if Im being thick here :)

I tried yesterday to get some heat resistant paint on glue for my retrim.

B&Q advised me to just use std contact adhesive.

Has anyone got a brand name thats tried and tested that I can go and buy on the way home.

Where did you guys get yours from too.

what temp rating should it be too?

I know its a million and one questions but I just wanna pick some up tonight and make a start - and I only wanna do it once - dont want summer to come round then have to retrim where it bubbles up.

Cheers.

Evo-stik Instant contact adhesive - Solvent version ! B&Q Sell it. Buy Large tin of the stuff (usually have to take empty tin to counter, and they get full tin out of the safe), and brush on (you'll need paint brush if not got one ;))

I've done 3 cars with it now, and have recomended it to everyone else who has done theirs.

I found the brush on stuff to be poo, I used the spray....but who knows, only time will tell...

The Non-solvent version is crap. Must get Solvent version. You brush on, leave few minutes, then stick together.

cheers bud, someone mentioned about thinning it down.

do you brush onto the vinyl or the hard plastic?

Where does the hairdryer come in?

Brush onto Panel and Vinyl. Use hairdryer to heat it up in places where you need to get around difficult corners, will give it more stretch.

I found the spray to be very strong. I made a mess of one with vinyl and decided to take it off and it was a bugger to get off again....

yep you can thin it down it gives you longer time to play with the fabric when you have atatched it. not much but its easier, also as i reccomended before if you have access to a steamer, one of the jml ones will do a steam genie then it makes life even easier as the steamer helps you move the fabric that much more round curves and corners.

I have a spray one - little worried spray will go everywhere :)

Does the solvent brush on have a high temp rating - do you have to ask for the solvent version? (I take it the can is stamped up as SOLVENT :) )

so do you put on glue, leave a few mins, then heat it up then lay it on

or

put glue on, leave a few mins, lay it on - then heat it and stretch to fit?

told ya - 1001 questions but this is a first for me and cant afford to screw it up

All help has been appreciated ;)

That one :) Wont need to heat it all, just the bits that get tricky. Pk's steamer suggestion sounds good.

Cans are clearly marked solved and solvent-free versions. Solvent version is like proper Brown gloopy sticky stuff. Solvent-free is White thinner stuff.

when fitting leather or vynil the use of a steamer helps the fabric to move and stretch that bit more, your not heating the glue up your letting the fabric loosen. when leather or vynil is warmed up it becomes more pliable and can be shaped easier. with contacty adhesive you usually find it will say leave to tack for about 20 mins. you dont usually have to wait that long, also by thinning it out when you do brush it on it wont form into those bloody orrible toffee like runs and pulls you sometimes get, it will just brush on evenly and flat.

also by thinning it out you can spray it on, which is what most upholsterers do with a fine head spray gun. just make sure you flush it through after

as an example watch american hotrod if you can and see how "gabe" does his, same techinique, they thin the adhesive, use a spray gun to spray it on, spray the back of the fabric, let it tack for 5 mins then start placing, they use formers which are pices of plastic with different smooth corners, also metal and a smooth scrapers to pull the fabric smooth , they also use a steamer to help with shaping.

nice one - I may thin it down with a little bit of thinners then.

you watch me thin it down too much :)

Cheers for all the advice people, it really is appreciated.

I used bodyline hight temp trim adhesive, comes in an aerosol, 1ltr brush on tin and 250ml brush on tin, available from all Partco motor factors and that was a couple of years ago with no bits fallen off since. As others have said, apply to both surfaces to be bonded and a steamer is your friend. HTH

dont have a steamer - however I do have my wifes steam iron :)

Would that do - its one of them that you press and it does a vertical jet of steam - as long as I dont get too close with the soleplate :)

Well its not perfect and I can see you getting burnt there mate, but to be honest I did all mine without the use of a steamer or iron, it was the first time I had done anything like this and I am happy with the end result and have had many compliments on it but I have since learnt and as people have said on here, a steamer helps a lot with all the corners etc.

no you cant use and iorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jml steam genie at b&q 29 quid, and its great around the house!!
