i just discovered this today on my import and wondered, is it standard? is it legal? is it a good idea?

when i indicate whith the headlights on the light on the outside of the indicator ( i thought it was a blank) comes on constant white and lights the kerb, pavement and hedge if i'm indicating left; and the other side of the road if i'm indicating right

i thought that to start with, but it's a very specific fault that almost seems to be a design feature

Not seen that before on an import, I would say someone has either done it on purpose to be different or its got a wiring fault like speedemon says, not sure on how it stand for an MOT????

Could be mate, but why?? I cannot see the point in that happening TBH as thats what headlights are for?? I stand to be corrected.

mine has it to..i damged mine went to andyz and he didnt have one like it and had never seen one like it before. its not a fault so dont worry

Mine does it, and always has, i figured it was normal! Nothing illegal about it at all, i checked!

Nothing at all illegal about that - the new Mercs have a relay that when you indicate at night, the fog light on that side comes on "to light your way round the corner!"

It maybe a wiring fault or someone wired it that way.....

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

It's fine bud, i,ve a series 2 jap tt and mine does it as well. It,s designed to light up the roadside as you turn and make you more easily seen by other road users who might be heading towards you as you pull out :D

Yes, definitely not a fault - my 1995 series 4 TT import does it, iirc it's called a kerb light and they're quite common in the USA (which is where the Z was aimed at...). Personally I think it's quite a nice touch!

On an import that part of the light unit is blank/empty. It has been modified.

Why they;ve done it..no idea !

I typed too slowly, and stand corrected. Not seen that before, including on other Jap S1 & S2's

not a relay - front SAM turns them on ;) :D

works on steering angle input too. stick it in reverse & the opposite light comes on!

...my 97 na's got them where my previous 91 na didn't. Nice touch really - I like them. Re MOT, as someone on here told me the indicators are normally tested with the headlights off - so a confused MOT tester won't ever see them lit up...

indicators should be tested with the lights on to see if there is a bad earth etc ;)

front fogs are not part of the test anyway!!
