Raleigh Chopper vs. Diamond Back BMX???

Not having owned a Raleigh Chopper but being interested in buying a used Diamond Back BMX I was wondering if anyone had any comments about the difference in performance? biggrin.gif

I know the Chopper has better gearing and the BMX is geared much, much lower but would the Chopper with its high back seat and fat back tyre smoke the BMX off the mark??? biggrin.gif

I know someone who has owned a Diamond Back and says I won't be disappointed with the looks and performance and that the Chopper is well and truly passed its sell-by-date. However I do like the riding position and better comfort of the Chopper...ohhhh I don't know what to do?

Any advice guys would be much appreciated! biggrin.gif

Thanks in advance...

Forget them both, they have unneccessary features that just add to the weight, like gears, and are both too lardy.

I always wanted a Chopper when I was younger but it was too big and expensive for me so I bought (well, my Dad bought me) a Tommahawk.

All the looks and styling of the Chopper in a smaller, more efficient package. Top bike!

biggrin.gif Tommahawk! LMFAO biggrin.gif

Well I rode my Bros Diamond back all the way from Cliftonville back to Broadstairs once and my friggin' legs were like jelly!!!

Low gearing is a bitch on them things which is why I'd always swayed towards the Chopper. More of a cruiser than a sprinter if you know what I mean mate? wink.gif

Decent set of tyres on a Chopper and tightened up handlebars and I'd say you get alot for yer hard earned! biggrin.gif

if you was poor like we were you had to endure the stigma of having a grifter brought for you. which was worse the grief off your mates for having a shite bike or the grief off your parents for being an ungratefull little git

Your parents were rich enough to buy you a Grifter? My parents couldn't afford to get me a skateboard so my dad made one out of a plank of wood (which was almost square) and 4 furniture castors, one on each corner. It was like a lethal shopping trolley, purely designed to murder as many small children as possible, with each wheel trying to go in a different direction. I still can't go near a supermarket without getting a chill up me spine

You had a Grifter Toolums??? Man I always wanted one! They were miles better than a chopper mate what you on about??? biggrin.gif

Changing gear on the grip and colour coded dots so you knew what gear you were in...tops. Only problem with the Bifter was that it was made of cast iron, I read somewhere that one scrapped Bifter could be turned into a full size Skip? True I swear mate! wink.gif

You lucky bugger! biggrin.gif

Hey, you can never have too many drills or typewriters! ROFL

I know what you mean. Remember Stock Car Smash Up. Fantastic game, smashing up cars against each other (some of us are still doing it LOL), I always wanted it when I was a we nipper, then I got it one Christmas. "Fantastic" you must be thinking, but I was about 16 at the time LYFAO

Of course, I still had a quick go with it, it would have been rude not too.

well the chopper has 3 gears so it will have a much better topend than the bmx.

When that little gear chain on the rear wheel snaps though as they always do then accelleration is poor cos your stuck in third gear and the bmx will smoke it off the lights.

The Tommahawk handled better then grifter/chopper because of short wheelbase and lighter weight!!

Any of you lot tried riding a BMX with pedal-back brake?? Total shit. Stop peddaling=Locked rear wheel!!

RCD

They were sadistic mothers them mate, was it not bad enough that you were riding a track bike on the roads so you had to pedal like fuck to make it go 5 yards??? All beit rapidly! biggrin.gif

But to make you face the uncomfortable ultimatum that if you even dare stop pedalling your off into a bush or rammed up the arse and flattened by a number 43 to Margate double decker mother!!! ROFLMFAO biggrin.gif

What were they all about???

Freestyle wasn't it? More like Communist stylee! biggrin.gif

sig.gif

Yes freestyle it was. All the fookin' pegs you put your feet on as well. They were there so it hurt more when you stacked it..

Cor now we are talking,

I had a Tomahawk, a Chopper, a Grifter and Grifter XL, a Bomber, a racer with cow horns, a Ultra Burner and a Super Tuff Burner (cool bike) and a real cushty Redline.

Those were the days LMAO!

Cars are shite!

I had a Diamond Back with those plastic mag wheels that myth had it u could pop in the freezer overnight if u buckled them. Hey presto straight wheel!

Hang on a minute if that works with Z brake discs id be minted!

Group buy on Fridge Freezers???

Anyone?????

LMAO biggrin.gif

I had a really pukka racer bought for me by me Daa which is how me Bro ended up with a lovely new Diamond Back. But the racer got half inched from outside the Squash Club while we were at Juniour coaching after only a few weeks of getting it! mad.gif

So me Dad(not lashing out twice in only a few weeks) took me down to House of Holland in Margate. Ohhhh man, I went in a proud boy and came out a laughing stock! "There you go son, that should get you to school and back!"...cheers Dad!

£49.99 Sunshine fucking Li-Lo fold up job! What street cred? biggrin.gif

But hey, with that seat hightened so my leg was fully extended at max seat-to-pedal ratio and them three gears I was overtakin' bloody cars for christs sake!

Didn't look much but it was a rapid son of a bitch make no mistake! LMFAO biggrin.gif

sig.gif

- Timmy Turbo's the name, drivel is me game! -

I used to stick playing cards with a clothes

peg into the spokes of the back wheel, to

make fantastic exhaust sounding effect stylee

Anyone else do that?

Fcuk the cow horns, it was ape hangers for me

Regardz

Fine times....

LMFAO! The best laugh we ever had was pullin a couple of hot chicks in a pub in Margate and telling em we were cool dudes with cars.

Little did they know when they said they was picking us up in an hour to head off to a club that me and me bro were fuckin racing them to get to the house on a BMX and a fold up sunshine lilo! How cool were we?

Still, the best laugh was watchin me bro doin the 1/4 mile in 9 secs on a fuckin fold up! Hehe! And, yes, it truely did fold up and was totally portable! Great.

Still, at least if me brakes failed on the old diamond back, i could use my right foot to stop the mother by jammin it in between the wheel and the frame.

Fucking burning Dunlop Green Flash trainers... LMAO!!

Hey can anyone remember the 5 speed chopper,it had a small lever beside the three speed T lever?
