How can I accurately measure/adjust the boost my car is running at? It is currently set via two bleed valves under the bonnet. Does this need to be done by a specialist or can I do it myself?

Mike what boost are you running at the moment?

Absolutely no idea. It was set when I had my new engine and hybrid turbos fitted by the garage that did the work.

Mike you should fit a boost gauge,if your car has boost jets, then it has more than stock boost, get a boost gauge fitted as if your boost is too high,it will dammage your engine 14psi,is safe with stock pistons.

OK. Which one should I fit and where from? Is this the only real way of adjusting boost... changing the bleed valve then driving it at full boost whilst watching the guage with the other eye?

Mike No a boost gauge! that will tell you how much boost you are running, once you know that then ajust it.

You should always have an accurate boost gauge if you're gonna mess with this stuff. I would hope that whomever set it up originally used a temporary gauge to make sure the boost was as expected - every car is a little different.

Have a word with Johnny, I got a Blitz gauge off him, a bit expensive, but a very smart device, a doddle to fit and a few handy features (like peak hold/memory - so you can check the boost after you drove the car).

Mike, safest and more reliable way, is using any of the aftermarket boost controllers, these tend to learn the boost curve for quicker responce, display the boost running, have a scramble feature for quick sudden overtaking and finally you can set the limit so it can't creep up, cost a couple hundred pounds upwards, but are worth the money in the end, any mechanical minded person can fit in around an hour or so, mail me if you want any of the technical specs, smithy cool.gif

So is there a concensus on a good place to moint a boost guage? Or, if as mentioned the Blitz has a peak hold function, could I simply mount it under the bonnet, referring back to it to see what boost the car reached after a run?

AndyP, what sort of price am I looking at? Ball park figure will do.

Mike,

As I said mine came from Johnny. It was roughly £180 (I think), but that did include the special sender which will also run 2 other gauges (water temp, oil pressure, oil temp etc) if you need them. I also got a single A pillar pod from Smithy at £65. You could probably do this for less but the Blitz gauge is dead cool ...
