Hi,

I'm having a pressure test done on friday, but I'm fearing the worst. Can anyone give me an idea as to how much it could be to replace the head gasket?

Fingers crossed I wont need it....

Cheers, Bart...

ZTech do a head gasket replacement for £1200 which includes all the engineering work parts and labour

Cheers mate. I knew it was bad... Is that engin out? If so, I might as well sort the turbos out aswell, recon or bigger new ones. Also PCV valves etc.

It is an engine out job. You can't get the turbos off without dropping the engine.

man that sounds expensive!! hoping tis not the worst news mate..

Cheers mate, I knew it was bad, but not quite that bad ;)

I'm just thinking, if it's going to be a big bad job, I might as well get some preventative work done in the process. But hay, lets look on the bright side. It might not be the head gasket. But knowing these motors, mine in particular, it's usually bad/expensive news..

I’m sounding very pessimistic aren’t I…

Is just the head gasket an engine out job??

Yes, as to get the heads off, you need to remove the manifold/turbos. Not enough room to do 'in-situ'. Whole lot's gotta come out.

Hmmm... The strange thing is, I had a new rad fitted last Friday. Then had a large air lock a few days later. It took loads of water, but when I started the engine water started to spurt out the top. Anyway, got it under control and put a good few pints in. A few days later, the water disappeared?!? No smoke or steam. No moisture in the tail pipes. No loss of power. The oil looks black. But the water is mysteriously disappearing?!?! I'll find out tomorrow if the head gaskets on its way out after its pressure tested. But if it isn’t that, what could it be??

Or he accidentally installed the Bermuda triangle inside my radiator  He didn’t charge for it…

see if your overflowtank is over the max.

what usually happens is the water is dropped into the overflowtank, because of the pressure buildup in the cooling system and once the overflowtank is full, the coolant is thrown out in the open.

it is possible, just not practical.

got the heads, turbos and manifolds off of mine with the engine in situ.

then decided to rebuild the lot and take the rest out - fookin numpty :smash:

Im still saving for the two grand to replace the turbos {got half} And im thinking know why not drop a V8 IN Poss sounder engine.?Time will tell.

have to admit i can sort of understand some people thinking of V8's but surly the turbo issue can-not be that big that its better to go that extreme...

lots of threads recently about which turbo to go for and there must be a simple way of getting the turbos swapped out without going down the replacement engine route...

(however after saying must not clever enough to suggest it myself!)

You gonna put bigger ones in?

It's a shame you couldn't go through the bulkhead, through a small panel or something. Or a combination of working through the bulkhead and under the car to get to the turbos.

to be fair it probably is much easier with the engine out. Had the turbo and manifold off on my 200 s14 in-situ and it was a big to work with really. Tightening the banjos up for the oil and water lines was damn near impossible and ended up snapping the spanners in half to get any kind of access. Then always the danger of cross threading one of the lines in to the (soft!) aluminum block.

Think engine out has alot of benifits for the guys working on it. But it does stop people without all the kit doing it themselves which is a shame

I think anyone can strip something its putting back right that bothers me.

If you were going to have the engine out for say a head gasket job. What would be worth doing while it was out? Recon the turbos or replace springs to mind (my zed has a good few miles on it, and its a transplant, didn't know that when I bought it).

Not correct you can remove the heads in situ with the turbo's and manifolds attached but because of all the playing around and time taken not to mention trying to line the dipstick back up in return its far easier to remove the engine

Thank the lord, the head gasket is ok. It was a leak spraying onto the exhaust, so it was evaporating the water straight away when it was hot. Thank you god

Although he said it was a little bit smokey on one side of the exhaust when it was up to temperature. Can anyone shed any light on this??

breather systym PCVs

turbo seals

what colours the smoke is it only

on boost

at idle

from cold start

can narrow it down from when the it starts to smoke normally ;)

Personaly, I have never noticed it smoking. The guy who works on my zed said it smokes a little bit on one side once its warm, idling. I don't like the sound of any smoke.

PCV's would be nice. Turbo's, thats a different matter..

Just out of intrest is yours decated?
