lol, cheers bud :)

If I can find the legality of it written down somewhere Ill print it off and keep it in the car so I can shove it up their feckin noses if they pull me.

Check here mate :- DVLA Linky

This shows the law as regards to character size, then just get a plate made up to accomodate them (remembering that you must have the margins right too)

cheers mate, nowt there about imports though.

Does that mean now all cars must have std plates even imports - what about the imports that are fitted with small plate mounting such as the 99 spec.

Would an import with a 99 spec front be this?

Technically it could accept a larger plate - mounting on the 99spec is small though.

There is a piece of legislation somewhere (don't ask me where) that says you can fit an OEM sized plate ie: whatever it had in Japan you can fit here. I used to carry the printed extract in the car in case I was ever stopped but I fear it's been thrown out with the rubbish long ago.

There is a line that you shouldn't cross with the size of number plates. Fook it I never like to toe the line......

I have a 99 spec size plate on mine and have never had any trouble. The MOT said the plate was too small but legible and passed me. I reckon that as long as you don't make it with a funny font you'll get away with it (touch wood). Dave

Oh well, speak of the devil. I was filling up earlier and a police riot van pulled up in the next pump. He had a word with my mate while I was paying:

Is this your car? No said my mate. Well tell your mate to sort his number plate out before I do!

The number plate has been on for many years and always passed MOTs. Plus its completely legible and very clear.

This is mine. Had no problems with it, although I rarely drive the thing. It's not strictly legal, but causes no concern. Font and colour is plain so draws no unnecessary attention to it.

Mine is a 3/4 size one from fancyplates.

When we were kids I remember some of the bigger beaches had those road trains etc (didn’t actually go on the road, but along the beach), and they used to have the names of the trains on number plates, it looks like even these have to comply with the new stupid rules, even thought they aren’t road vehicles

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_register_numberplate.htm

17. A customer wants a number plate to display on a 'show' vehicle. It will only be used off-road and never on a public highway. What documentation is required?

Any number plate designed to be fixed on a vehicle or trailer must comply with the regulations, irrespective of whether it is used on the road or not. Proof of entitlement for the vehicle and proof of personal ID will be required.

I'm going to order the motorbike spec plates, as the full ones restrict air to my Rads

if theres no uk rescess on the front, which on a J spec there obviously isnt, then in my book you can have whatever size you jolly well like, I normally use a 13"x6.5" which is j-spec size on the rear, the front I have the same size, but also have a 13"x3" for weekends, yer the police give me jip, but I've got a nice friendly MOT guy who happily stamps them to get me out of bother.

To add a little to Peachs' informative post, have a look at my post HERE (#10) which expands upon the requirements needed to stay small but legal.

Buy law if its a jap import car you can have small letters on the rear because the rear bumper will only expept a square plate with small letters if big uk size letters are used then it will be illegal because the spacing between letters and reflective background is too small which ive seen on lots of jap imports . On the front a uk long plate has to be used with uk letters because there is no small square plate moulding .I dont know about 99 spec japenese domestic market front bumpers but unless your car is a 99 spec z32 which it wont be because they dont meet the sva type aproval and not allowed to be imported then you cant have a square plate on the front.Uk spec cars have to have long plates front and rear with uk full size plates and uk numbers.

It’s funny how it’s accepted that on the rear, the plate has to be small enough to fit the Jap recess, and no one is being told to simply forget about the Jap recess, and bolt a full size plate on the rear bumper. But on the front that is exactly what they are expecting, the problem is that we are buying all of these go faster goodies, and cooling is already an issue on the Z, so plastering the air ducts with a large number plate isn’t right, and the DVLAs wording appears to allow for this.

Hi Taff im not sure about that becouse how do the Alfa Romeos get away with it?

Steve

a picture of mine bud ,was done the smallest and correct spacings if you want bud i will measure the letter and gap between them ,,im not sure but i think the letters are 80mm high and 10mm gap but the rest of the plate you can do what you want with as long as the letters are this size,,,,ps son is a copper

you can only fit a smaller plate legally on an import only if you cant physically fit a UK sized one. it will physically fit, will look ugly, but it will fit!

iv got a rather small one ( :o ) on mine - looks much better!!

as far as MOT goes, you cant fail for the size of the plate, as long as its correctly spaced & has correct lettering.
