I'M LOOKING FOR ADVICE. I've a series 2 lwb jap auto tt. i was driving at aprox 50 mph when i lost power. the car went to the nearest Nissan dealer for a diagnostic check and i was informed that the cambelt was broken. I was then told that they don't do work on imports. There are not many Z32 experts in Ireland. I've been told that the valves will be bent by one person and that everything should be ok by another person, and a third person said it's luck of the draw. Should i let my mechanic mate do the cambelt even though he's never done one before or should i trailer it over to Zedworld at great expense to myself fo ferries etc. Love the club by the way. there always seem to be friendly, helpful people supporting each other in their times of despair! any help will be greatly appreciated. Richie K.

Apparently, although it defies logic, auto boxes (on Zeds) save cars from internal damage like that. I can't understand why, as you'll still have inertia there turning the engine even though the autobox does disengage.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I have seen two auto's of late with snaped cambelts both of which distroyed the valves, likewise a manual that was recently in with a similar story was fine

for the time it takes to put the belt on fit one and do a quick compression test. you might be lucky but in my experience its mostly bad news.:(

Thanks guys. should i let my mate have a go at doing the belt?
tbh I would let your mate have a go if he's a half decent mechanic he will have no trouble in replacing the belt , seems a little pointless getting it shipped over if the engine is damaged, if all is ok then you have just saved yourself a shed load of money and as DS300zx has just said once the new belt is on a quick comp check will verify if all is ok

ok, bad news in what way? am i better off getting another engine? Whats the most cost effective way of getting it up and running? I've ordered £2500 worth of bits from Luke in Z-centre. I still need to know if my mate would be up to the task as he would save me a lot of money

Bad news as in more often than not when a cambelt snaps internal damage occurs, the problem with these engines are that they are close interferance therfore not much room for error

If your guy is not sure about the cambelt more than happy to talk him through it

Thanks buddy, i'm praying to God that it's just a belt change. I only got the car in September. It's a well minded one with 2yrs NCT (Irish MOT) there's only 48k miles on it. I went to great expense to get a set of TSW Catalunya alloys (8*19 at the front and 9*19 at the rear) I've also got the Avic X1R sat-nav stereo. On order i've got a mongoose exhaust, Blitz induction kit, full wide arch kit, white dials and a load of other bits from Luke @ Z centre

Let your mate have a go. My son is 20 and has only been an apprentice for 12 months. It took him nearly 7 hours but as Nissan wanted £1000+ I thought what the hell. All it cost me was the price of the bits (belt and waterpump) and a little bit to keep him in beer. All in all £150. She has now done over 1000 miles and is running like a dream. He reckons that it wasn't difficult - just time consuming.

there was a thread not that long ago with the number of someone in ireland who specalised in fixin zed`s ill look for it now

Well guys, I recieved a phone call from my mechanic buddy last night, his first words down the phone were "You're one jammy git". I've never been so glad to be called a git. The engine appears to be running fine

If you get stuck, I'm breaking my low mileage engine soon because of a failed piston ring. The heads are very good. One of the smoothest engines I've heard.

Thanks mate for the offer. I hopefully won't be needing it if what my mate says is true. I can get back to work on doing the bodywork and tuning now
