Important rust issue

Guys as you know I have been around zeds for some years now, and more so of recent months having started Zed world etc.

Point is I have got close up (steady!) with the underside of a fair few cars now and the rust levels are becoming a concern of mine and for the UK spec owner cars especially.

Some years ago when grey import bullshit was

prevalent and the motor industry were condeming imports for their poor spec comparison and poor parts availablity and indeed that imports where not undersealed so not suitable for this country unless done.

Now this is by no way a put down just an observation but out of say every 10 cars I become involved with 6 will have a rust issue underneath or and wheel arches and in the sill area and out of that 6, 5 will be UK cars.

I do think we all need a timely reminder of the age of these cars and to be honest if the trend continues the Uk car stock will deplete (already started) to a level where only imports are available.

All Zeds are undersealed import or not so the crap that they are not is false. However all us smug import owners need to be aware once your car has done a couple of Winters in good old Uk`s weather the same fate befalls you as that of the Uk spec cars.

My main point been in the next few months the crappy weather should be behind us (hopefully) and it`s all to easy to forget about the underbody and wheel arches on a sunny day with the targa`s out.Make a note in your diary or on your calender to have the underbody steamed cleaned (proffessionally) and re undersealed with a heavy shultz or waxoyl solution, otherwise I fear the demise of the Zed could be already in place, underneath our backsides as we drive. eek! eek.gif

You are dead right. My 92 UK Z has paintwork that looks flawless. But last summer I discovered some small bubbles in the thick anti stone chip paint on the sills. It was close to the back wheel arches. I ground it back and found much more rust hidden by the thick paint. At the time I resorted to filler cause it was not too extensive and waxoyl inside. Just recently I noticed very slight bubbling in an area on one rear wheel arch. Obviously theres more rust under there. Unless you look closely when you wash it you wont see it till its bad. What to do?

Grind off the paint and filler if not too extensive or is there a better way? Lead loading or brazing or repair sections?

Also how to stop it spreading?

As I said I injected waxoyl last year even in the inside of the double skinned bits but how can you be sure you get full coverage?

It is now about protecting the investment!

Good point, I've been worried that my import was not undersealed and after 2 winters here there are a few spots of rust around the sills.

I meant to get it all re-treated last summer and never got round to it.

As soon as things dry up a bit i'm getting it done.

What's the point of us fitting body kits and mods if the thing turns into a pile of rust?

I have only found one spec of rust on mine and it was under the passenger door mirror, where there seems to be no rust protection at all. Amazing really.

This guy is supposed to The Daddy for rust proofing .... http://www.before-n-after.co.uk/

Yeah bloody rust, you may know I had a full respray last year, all the rust was cut out, filled and the rest, nice respray, what do I find this week when cleaning, RUST in nearly the same bloody place, rear wheel arch and near the petrol cap, I'm not a happy bunny, looks like another trip to the bloody shop again this year, I knew I should have kept it white instead of having a custom colour frown.gif
