my mate has been looking for a turbo car which would be good looking and cheap to maintain.

ive mentioned the calibra turbo 4x4 as i used to have one but he also likes the look of the front wheel rover 220 turbo

so i have put up a poll to assist him in which is better overall.

cheers guys

Both cars have engines too powerfull for the chassis. Cant comment on reliablity or anything else about them.

If he wants a cheap Turbocharged car then he would be much better looking at something like a 200sx

I've known loads of Calibra 4x4's to go wrong, and cost a lot to fix.

Personally ('cos I've had one ;)) I'd recommend the Tomcat - still not the most reliable car about (after all, it IS a Rover) but IMO much better looking and definitely faster than the Vaux. Go for a metallic charcoal with a tan leather interior, like mine was

under 2000 lol

Plenty of 200sx's under £2k, and I dont see why insurance would be anymore than the Chavibra or the Rover.

Could also look at early Celica GT4's

yep 200sx would be my choice, Rover ??? are you havin a laugh ???

The choice offered was Calibra or Tomcat - if 200sx was in there too, I would have said that too :D

Anyway, I loved my Tomcat - I'd have another if my Z wasn't sooooooooooo great!

200sx, I know where there is a nice S14 for sale, PM me if he's interested.

Other than that, the Calibra's are ok, but if a transfer box go's (which it will) thats a big bill

Dont know sod all on the Rovers im afraid!

My mate had one when he was in scotland..................it took me just under 2 hours to blow up his gearbox!!! and i was taking it easy too !!!

I'd steer well clear of the 220. Eats headgaskets for a past time. Has an old man image.

Only things that go wrong with the Calibra are the transfer boxes. The engines are far better built and designed and can take a lot more tuning. Much better looking as well.

I'd never ever own a Rover. Utter shite.

He'll not get cheap insurance with either of those two and he's gotta be pretty stupid to thing that he will.

if i were would consider a well looked after 600 ti , as well same engine as the tomcat ,, t16 rover turbo engine,, but the 600 is a wolf in sheeps clothing, but get a good one with service history on ebay going for 600-1500 , 200bhp,standard place called motobuild will look after you for upgrades the right way , there in hounslow, got a website as well ,

iirc the calibra/cavalier turbo's used to twist

the chassis as it couldn't cope with the power.

As for the rover...sorry, wouldn't have a rover...ever!

imho they are just rubbish, head gaskets, heater

matrix's, dodgy electrics, the list goes on.

As before, tell him to get a 200sx, a good

s13 is well within his budget.

I seem to be on my own with this Tomcat thing don't I LOL :smw: :D

i hate the dashboard on the calibra lol but love the car from the outside.

transfer box costs around a grand which is hefty hes being stupid saying he doesnt like the looks if the 200sx. i told him about the amount of fun u can have in the wet.

who's voting for the rover? its a maestro turbo with a bodykit on LOL

tell him to try a fiat coupe 20v turbo, but the 200sx is the best i've had 3 and would still have another.

Having worked for rover main dealers for years and done more headgaskets than I care to remember on the t16 engine, the tomcat engine also suffers from burnt out pistons if abused and if they need replacing(excluding the rebore if needed) you can only buy the pistons with the conrods attached , which cost about175 quid each and thats without the incurable oil leaks,so there is probably not much in both cars, cause the calibre 16v engine also tends to suffer from headgaskets and porous heads /tranfer problems etc.

I know its nice to be top of the class when you're young and all that but I think if you cant affrord to run a car then dont go cheap. Your life and others is at stake? If you cut corners with power then you are asking for trouble. Tell your mate to get a reasonable car and leave the turbos until he can afford one. Trying to make the car fit in your pocket dont work. IMO.

But if he must then yes.....200SX great car indeed. :D

Rover IMHO! Me and my Bro took a calibra Turbo out and it was cack! Plus most of the 220 Turbo Rover Mowers have T-Bar roofs...'ave it!!! LARGE!!! ;) Oh and they look much nicer, always been a bit of a sleeper, I used to have a Rover 820Si on a K plate and it was a quick motor for the fact that it was a right lardy @rse...but the K-series 2.0 16v motor with a blower? Hmmmmmmmmm! Only thing to watch out for is...as per usual with any turbo motor...head gaskett failure.

My next door neighbour years ago was seeing this bint from Ceefax dating...that's another story...but she had one of them (Rover 220 Turbo) when they were brand spankers pretty much and she'd had the head gaskett done. It had only done about 14K! Be warned!

Used to own a calibra turbo myself. Liked it a lot (apart from a replacement turbo and pleaty of water leaks. Can't comment on the rover though. If I had 2K for a turbo car I would look at someting Jap (tend to be more reliable)

I would rather have a Fiat Strada Abrath. Ugly as sin but goes like stink and handles really well.

TX boxes cost about half that to be reconditioned.

You don't like the dash in the Calibra....have you seen the geriatric tired looking thing in the Rover then? One of the worst dashboards ever made IMHO.
