I joined this site to learn more about Zeds and I have, for which I thank you all. But I think I have worked out that actually I can't afford to run one

I'm not bothered about the petrol, insurance or tyres etc but everyone just seems to be plowing thousands into there cars each year keeping them going and I realistically can't do that. I am heartbroken at this as I love the car and really fancied a TT but I am still toying of going down the NA route

What do you guys think?

Buy one and go for it. Make sure the one you get has already had the most comman things changed and has been looked after.

If it gets expansive, sell up and go for an NA.

dont forget you only see the problems on here, which could happen on any car you own. that is the problem with car forums, they sometimes make the cars look bad!!

iv had mine for nearly 4 years now with hardly any problems at all!! regular servicing & mods aside, the only things that have actually failed was my PTU (repaired it & could have left it at that, but got a new one for about £130) & a starter motor.

not bad going id say ;)

but if you really are concerned then prob best to get a ford or something!! :D

You'll also find that alot of us are upgrading parts because we want to not just because they have become worn.

HARSH

I've not spent a penny other than on styling mods. I do have some maintenance planned in the new year, but nothing major. Hardly ever use my Zed anyway.

I've not had any major problems in a year and a half of ownership, only slight little niggles here and there. Do the service myself, even me and me dad did the cam belt a few weeks back (just the cam belt, nothing else, no problem up to now (touch wood)) and try and sort other things myself. I'm very slowly upgrading bit by bit as I'm on a rather tight budget. Not sepent anywhere near £k's on it, well, only in fuel and oil  ;)

My zed has been a very cheap car to own. Had it over a year and its been No different to a regular car for maintenance and servicing costs and has been 100% reliable.

stick with it....best fun you can have for under £4k...sure you have to spend a bit too keep it going but this is the same for all cars with any sort of performance...there is no such thing a maint free car....but its more like hundreds than thousands (except when running a modded beast)...i saw that a bland rover freelander gearbox would set you back £4.5K !! ...makes the zed very very good value on that score alone...even bog std BMW's can set you back £1K per service per year....cars never make financial sense...these make sense mainly if its classic use as the insurance will be p1ss...daily driver sure its poss but makes less ££ sense as per milage and insurance are factors

see this is the problem with this site.

I have had next to no trouble at all with my car. My mates have all had more hassle with thier brand new ones.

had mine 18 months only replaced battery n clutch master cylinder oh and the 2 silly water hoses that run under timing belt cover a few niggles but nothing major go for it get one :)

Ive had 2 Z's now, my first i never had any problems with, the only money i spent was servicing and upgrading.

The current one i bought as a project with a shot gearbox. I had to buy a new box (obviously) and a few service items, and again, apart from upgrading, nothing major has gone wrong (well, heater matrix and 2 water pipes) and considering i take mine on track days, drag strips and a good blast in France, Belguim this year i cant complain.

All you have to do is keep ontop of the servicing and enjoy the ride!! Simple as that!

Im new to the 300ZX and have jyst bought a 93TT and so far all i can say is WOW. Ive had mk3 supra's for the last 3 years and they are a nightmare for things failing, from what i can tell the 300ZX is very well biult in comparison.

Go for it buy one you wont be disapointed!!!

I've just got one aswell - its got a few things that need sorting but even still its like nothing else i have ever driven

Just make sure you take a good look at the car before you buy it & follow the buyers guide & you'll be fine mate.

I've got a J reg, manual, NA and in 1 1/2 years, other than routine servicing and mods of my own choosing, all I've had to do is change the battery (£60-00), the radiator (less than £100 fitted) and as a precautionary measure change the starter motor (around £60-00 fitted).

Careful use of this site's resources kept these costs down to what they were.

The car is my daily driver, kept on my driveway and is used in all weathers.Insurance is just over £300 fully comp on Classic Insurance and I get 23 mpg.

Great car, great site and great people on here.

Well if you "hardly ever use it"...give her to me, I will...jk :hyper:

What about a 200sx? Great cars, and will be a smaller step up to the 300 when you do make the leap.

My only failure in 10 years has been a series 1 PTU. Everything else has been wear and tear (tyres, clutch, brake pads etc..) They are very reliable if looked after properly

As above and agree with others comments...

For A car of this age, I've not spent that much, only on replacing items which fail due to common wear and tear, then choosing to upgrade if and when this situation arises :D

But for what you can buy these cars for, providing you take the time to search for one that has been well maintained(check out the cars for sale on this site), price-wise you'd have nothing similar in comparison...Best car I've ever had so far, Power, Fun and Looks, yeh shes a little thirsty, But I love my Z ;)

Yea I'm thinking about it....is there such thing a drifting school?

Bite the bullet and buy one :D

otherwise you will never know what you could have had. If you dont like it you can always sell it :D

Iver had my NA about 2 1/2 years now with no problems. Well one, i once needed to clean up a connector. Apart from that its has been fine.

I have caught the modding bug though, so ive spent a fair bit.

I agree that forums make cars look bad. Its not like we would post up every day we dont have a problem.

Get an NA, but make sure it's a manual or it may feel a little too heavy IMHO. I am enjoying owning my NA far more than I ever did my TT - not because it costs less to own (although it does) but I just prefer NA power delivery, albeit slightly less power.

Still a quick car though, and great looks for the money.

Like Nike say - JUST DO IT!!!

tbh ,, its mainly about the first one you buy tbh, get a well looked after example and you shouldnt go far wrong, i no ive probably spent more than most this year but i am well aware of its going to last me a good few years yet,

as i no nothing else can go wrong,,

" i shouldnt of said that , in hagrids voice"

but in all seriousness they are 15 yrs old some of these cars, and you have to expect this , in all fairness i bought a 98 reg turbo rover 600 ti and sold it before engine went bang but it had had two gearboxes and 100 s spent on just keeping it on the road for all the street cred of a ford fiesta, !! the zed wether is an na or tt its beautifull car and so far ahead of its time when built, you wont regret it, ps im available for you to come round and have a drive if it helps to make your mind up , all the best paul ,
