Hello mate, you cant legally insure your dads car anywhere mate as your not the owner/registered keeper,

However if your dad is willing to change insurance companies to put you on thats a different story, If thats the case i'd say try elephant or admiral themselves as they tend to take on quite high risks or look at the brokers as they can usually always find someone who'll insurance stuff

Any more questions about general insurance just let me know as i work for an insurance company mate :x:

Yep thats right, unless its a trade car i.e. a courtesy car :D

You would get really hammered by the insurance company if they found out when/if a claim situation arrises

Your dad will have to get a policy somewhere else with a company that will insure you mate.

but can you cancel an insurance before the contract expires?

Yes of course, you can cancel a policy at anytime.

There may be a charge for doing this though depending on your company.

If your dad pays monthly there shouldn't be a charge because part of the direct debit guarantee says and i quote "you have the right to cancel your direct debit at anytime!"

I'm with endsleigh and they have no problem with me not owning the car (and they originally quoted for it not being registered in my name - which was originally going to be the case).

and before you say my insurance will be invalid i double checked with them before I took out the policy and, unfortunately, it's in the bodyshop after a shunt last weekend so no problems there!

Another company i've used to insure other people's cars is http://www.dayinsure.com and they cover europe for 20% extra. For refernce, it cost me £20 a day to insure a CLK so not cheap but ok. The policy's with norwich union so legit.

theres no legal reason why you have to be registered keeper of a car - it's just standard policy.

but the direct debit guarantee has nothing to do with the contract! probably find you'll lose that year's no claims addition, and possibly only get a credit for the remaining policy term!

it'll cost you £12 a day for european cover on your dad's car on dayinsure

Exactly - that's why during the quote they ask if you are the registered keeper and if not, who is.

EG. I'm thinking of replacing my Rav-4 with a new one, but instead of selling the old Rav I was going to give it to Julia and get rid of her Corsa. Rather than register her as the keeper at DVLA (which gives it an additional owner unnecessarily, since the car is staying within our household) I can leave it in my name but switch it over to her policy with her as the main user.

Direct Line do not care that I am still the registered keeper. Providing we are honest about who is the main driver and I can prove I am the main user of another car.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
