ffs & its already broken :rant: :rant:

 

My new aquasition i.e. the 300zx started developing a rattle on acceleration.

 

Took her down to GDA sports cars in Kent & left it with them for a diagnostic,

 

turns out the exhaust has come loose from the turbos & is rattling. They've got her now till monday. Otherwise it was going to be over a week till they can sort it.....

After your turbo comes the down pipe and it's highly unlikely that that would have just come loose unless one of the studs has snapped. Are they 100% spot on its not a heat sheild ? they could just be trying to get big money out of you as replacing a downpipe is a HUGGGGGGGGGGE job to a non Z specialist.

Well to be honest i'm not mechanically minded so i couldn't really confirm what they said,

 

They are speciallists in all Jap cars & the owner has a 300 Fairlady, plus he's done work on my Zed before i bought her so i believe he is capable at doing the job.

 

He quoted a 4hr job with new gasket so i'm looking at a 200 quid bill..

Maybe the fact they kind of know a bit about the zed mean they'd know how to screw you, i'd defo get someone else to verify it, and they'll probably (hopefully) not have actually made a start on it yet.

Confirm what he is exactly going to do 1st ;)

got to go with chris on this one, and go further and say it would probably need more than one of the three bolts to snap for the downpipe to "rattle". I would put my money on a vibrating heatshield, which you can either cut off, or tack weld together (it is filled with a fibrous heat sheild material which gets shaken into a loose pwder and drops out, causing your heat sheild to be loose around the down pipe)

..unless when you say "rattling" you mean blowing ?

Ohh & just remembered - the rattle goes when its warmed up..

I must admit I agree with Chris as well. I have used GDA in the past and they are very competent ... I always took my Z there for any work. They specialise in imports and I always saw a zed there ... funnily enough LOL.

 

Graham I think owns it and is a top mechanic .. as long as he is working on your Z if you know what I mean ..

i have what appears to be blowing which sounds like a loud tappet noise but in reality it is a small leak from the gasket on the downpipe/turbo which seals in about 3 mins of warming up. I dont really know if this is relevent ??

its like solving a murder, as new bits of evidence comes to light ie "goes when warm" the final outcome will be a million miles from first estimate. this forum rocks :bow: :bow:

Turns out the previous owner was aware of this & did nothing about it - so ownly a 1/4 of the current gasket is remaining.... :headvswal

 

sorry for the rant guys - i was just pissed off that i'm Zedless till Monday.

hi james where is this place bud as i live in teynham near sittingbourne and never heard of them mate,i would take it to mark at the zen garage bud,he aint that far,but then again i dont know where you live mate

I had a rattle develop as dome of you remembered me posting about.

 

Turned out to be the sheild near teh gear box where the bearing was hitting it.

 

40 minute fix.

 

Got quoted at one place a new downpipe etc and over a £600 bill. So get a 2nd oppinion, say whatever you want but get someone else to look it over.

Cheers mate - i'm just letting them get on with it - GDA are based in Fordcombe, and i live in Tonbridge.

 

On hindsight i will from now on be taking it to a ZX Specialist.

I had this - rattle on startup that went when warmed up. As said above, it was a disintegrating exhaust heat shield...

Sounds like a heatsheild. Mine does exactly the same. I'll live with it.
