i have a 300 tt regestered october 92 uk car , can i remove my cat's and still be ok for a M.O.T?

if so will this not affect my emissions results??

Early, late, makes no odds m8.. the law changes for Aug 1992 onwards..

 

Although having said that, I have a 1994 Renault 19 16v that seems to be missing it's furry companion..

 

Passes its MOT - you have to know the right places though. And technically, if pulled over for a spot check, it would be illegal..

Someone told me that if you remove the cats then it affects the mixture because the O2 sensors rely on the cats being there. Don't know if there's any truth in it!

Erm, doubt that very much Shaun!!! If you have cats you really need O2s to get the exhaust clean enough for the cats though wink.gif

 

On the removal front, I understood it to be illegal to remove the cats if they were standard fitment on ANY car... Saying that who sticks to all the speed limits? who declares all their mods to the insurance? etc etc etc you get my point wink.gif If it passes the emissions test then thats enough in my book.....

Shaun - you are right if the car is new enough to be built to ODB-II standards. With these there are two O2 sensors for each CAT - one before, and one after.

 

If there is no difference between the emissions before and after the CAT, then the car will go into limp home mode (i.e. you cant' remove the CAT.. at least, not easily wink.gif)..

 

Our cars are ODB-I btw, apart from post 1996 models in the US which are ODB-II

I know that not to be true. I noticed it on the board in the MOT test centre, saying pre K reg can legally remove CATs.

It's supposedly only worth about 15bhp unless you've a seriously modded engine. I think it was Warren who said that his dyno tests showed little difference on or off.

If you go to a big exhaust it'll be too loud as well so forget decent ice.

The last owner of mine put them back on because the noise was way too much for comfort. Alternative is more silencers but that adds back pressure and you're back where you started.

Oh well, the guy that told me that is obviously talking out of his exhaust pipe!!!

Maybe I'll check the state of my cats & if they're knackered I'll gut them. The cat temp light has been coming on a lot since the car has had that hesitation problem!

My car runs very low emissions without the cats so you shouldnt have a problem unless your cars in a bad state of tune anyway.

As for the legal side...Who gives a shit ffs.
