Has anyone else experienced a rattle/tapping that occurs when the engine is hot? It sounds almost (i.e. not completely) metallic and comes from the front of the engine around the viscous fan/water pump area. I'm using 10/40 Magnatec so I don't think its my oil, and I don't think its the fan either.

I know it could be the cambelt tensioner or some of those things the cambelt runs over, I was just wondering if anyone recognised the heat factor as being symptomatic of something.

if you have a conzult, see if switching the VTC solenoids make it sound different.

You could also disconnect both solenoids manually (connectors are at the back/side of the engine)

Also, how's the oil pressure when hot ?

and I presume you have enough oil in the engine ?

Thanks, hadn't thought of that. Rattles gone away now its cold again, although I noticed when driving along the oil pressure was briefly at about quarter of the way along the gauge, although it returned to 60 again pretty quickly. Fingers crossed its not my oil pump, or water pump, or lifters.

auto?....could be torque converter...IIRC they tinkle rather than rattle...the other rattle is detting which i heard described by some as marbles in a glass jar...!

Nah, the noise is coming from the front of the engine not the TC.

Engine running too Hot?

Could be, is that something that happens when the engine gets too hot? My temp gauge wasn't even half way but I noticed the engine was too hot to touch, not having much experience with Zeds I didn't know whether that was normal or not.

Ah, I just thought if my thermostat is jamming closed then this might make the car overheat (and cause the tapping?), the connections to the sensors on the front are ok but the sensor may not be working/accurate.

It does get quite hot under the bonnet on most zed's due to the engine and all being crammed in there...

Engine's will knock or rattle if they get way to hot!

Found the problem- its something to do with the thermostat, had the car idling for a while, and after a while the engine was much cooler and the radiator is much hotter. I'm a bit concerned the temp sensor didn't register the high temperature before, so I think I'll change it with the thermostat just to be safe.

unfortunantly the stock temp gauge is pants and will warn you when it is pretty much to late, approx 112oc before it rises to max or thereabouts,id get your self an aftermarket gauge and sender so you can keep an eye on any engine temps when needed ;) clean the connectors on the water pipes.sometimes a fouled plug can make it seem like the car is taking a long time to warm up
