What should happen when you.....

Press the brake pedal?

The last time I remember doing this I seem to remember the car gradually slowing down.

However, this morning on my way to work this did not happen and the pedal hit the deck. "OH SHIT" SPRUNG TO MIND.

Luckily I wasn't going to fastbut talk about being snookered. I was 2miles from work, ready for work and without my tools. So RAC and Nissan were the only thing I could do to remedy the situation. This is the price you pay for not knowing the area.

Am waiting for a phone call from Nissan to see what the extent of the damage is. Hope I can claim off my Waurranty.

Boo Hoo!

That is fucking scary!

I thought we had dual circuit arrangements, etc to minimise the chances of this happening. And I can't imagine anything between the pedal itself and the master cylinder breaking.

The only time this happened to me was when I managed to boil the brake fluid in the Lotus Carlton by murdering it just a little bit too much! I can't see you boiling the fluid on your way to work.

Let us know what the problem was 'coz my worst nightmare is barreling up to aroundabout, braking at the last minute and finding nothing there. Will be driving home a little more sedately than normal tonight...

I had that happen on a Caprice years ago...twas the master cylinder Phuket!!! wink.gif

Hope it's not too expensive Cos mate. Talk about in the hands of the Nelson blank cheque writing club! Don't know which is more scarey? Brakes failing or knowing that Nelson muppets are tinkering with yer motor!!!

Could be one of three things really :-

1) Lost brake fluid through a line splitting

2) Master cylinder seals have gone west

3) Slave cylinder seals have gone west

Nothing too major with any of the points really. If the fluid level is still up then I would say it was the master cylinder seals. If not then the other two are a possibility.....

Hope this helps (and glad you stopped wink.gif )

CheerZ,

Andy

We'll do.

The worst thing is that I have to drive home in a micra or summat that the Rental company deliver!

Thanks for the support guyz.

Work colleages have NO idea.

Yeah I know what you mean. I've had a Middlehurst silver Micra for the last two days while mine's been in for some work. Better than the flourescent green and yellow ones they used to have anyway.

Got it up to 102mph though (private M62 officer, not the real one) by leaving it in fourth gear. See if you can beat that. It'll give you something to do while waiting for yours back.

Mike

Actually, Avis have just dropped off a Brava 1.2 16v. Have driven one before, not bad for a 1.2.

102mph was it?

That's not fair! I only had 1 litre to play with. I did have a trailing wind though and was slip streaming a Reliant Robin for part of my run up!

Nissan are just beginning to strip it now.

God help me.

They say that they will update in the morning.

I tell you something guys and gals.

We complain sometimes that our Z's aren't handling quite as well as we would like and that the acceleration could be better. Well I'll tell you, try driving a Fiat Brava at 117mph. NOW THAT IS SCARY.

Well, atleast thats what the clock said. Cant be that bad out of a 1.2 16V with just over 5K miles.

Come back Z, all is forgiven.

Work hired me a Megane to drive to Wales in.

Didn't feel safe at all, body was rolling all over the place.

Driving cars with soft suspension scares the hell out of me after driving my old FTO or the Z, feels like they're gonna fall over

How long would you guys say it would take to diagnose the problem. More than an hour?

Cos is your Z an early 90'(pre 92) model? as these models had faulty brake master cylinders which were prone to failure.

Glad to hear both you and your Z survived unscathed.

Brian

Thats interesting. Mine is a 91' on a J. Gives me something to pre-empt with.

???????????????????

was there a call back for replacement?

if not should we change them?

is that expensive?

They're always going on about this in T.T.net, I'm not sure if there was a recall or not, but if you look at the master cylinder on a series 1 car and compare it to a series 2 they're different. If you do a search on this on T.T.net you'll get a load of replies.

Cheers,

Brian.

Well

Heres the verdict.

Supprisingly Nelsons only charged me £22.50+VAT for the inspection and diagnosis which took them 24hours.

Their diagnosis was that the Front N/S Caliper had seazed(spelling!!!)and turned the brake fluid in to shit and that is why the pedal hit the deck so easily.

Anyway, they wanted to charge me over £560 for a new caliper. new pads, brake fluid and fitting. Saw this a being a little on the "F*&%ing Extortionate" side.

Nevertheless, seeing as RAC wouldn't help again, I bit the bullet and drove the car back from Sheffield to home (23 miles) at no more than 45mph. That was painful I can tell you.

However, I am booked in to "Z World" and will be landing in the morning.

DONT YOU JUST HATE IT WHEN YOU HAVE CAR TROUBLE!!!
