My car overheated today on the way back from Corby to Leics :( ... It didn't cut out or anything and I managed to crawl back home as it only happened 1/2 a mile away!!

Does anyone fancy helping me sort this? I'm hoping its just a burst pipe or something - Whats the worst it could be?

Cheers for any help in advance :smw:

Hope the overheating has not caused other problems mate. In future if your Z overheats, pull over rite away and let it cool down.

Yes look for holes in pipes, they do go rottern

I hope so too! :(

A bit more info - It was steam not smoke... And when I noticed I pulled over and let it cool for a little while. There was a shop near by so I bought a 2l bottle of still water (NOT out of the fridge!) and filled up the rad - The bottle didn't fill it, but I left it a little longer then limped the remaining half mile home!

Under the engine drivers side it looked like there was a wet patch and the steam was coming out of the black cowling in front of the engine!

What shall I do now? I need the car for work tomorrow so really need to get it sorted asap - Should I wait for it to cool and then refill/bleed it?

Let it cool, fill it up and run it with the bonnet up and look for leaks/steam. Once youve found the problem, fix it!

Thats the best I can give mate, Also well worth buying the silicone pipe kit from Smithy in the traders area, if your starting to get holes, best stop more from happening. Replace as much of the old rubber pipes as you can

Check your end caps on the Rad

Will do Chris - Excuse my ignorance but where abouts are they? I can't see much from the underneath because of the undertray!

Don't 'spose anyone in Leics fancies helping me out do they?

The black plastic bits on the rad :)

Top or bottom? Checked the top and water definately hasn't leaked out of them!

As everyone else has said the only thing you can do is look for the leak then if none are visable from normal tickover, let it cool down and pressure test it. It depends on how much pressure the engine was under at the time of it leaking. I also noticed that you said you had been to the fridge to get water. Bud, don't do that because putting cold water into a hot engine can cause major damage such as a crack in the case. Good luck bud. Hope its not to bad and just a burst hose. Where was the steam coming from??

:smw: Luckily they had some on the shelf - Luke warm/room temp so I thought it would be ok!

Thanks for the help! One more thing, how do I pressure test it?

Where abouts in Leics are you????

Cheers Chunk! Was gonna pop down yours tomorrow anyway to get that indicator loom ... I'll bell or text ya tomorrow afternoon!

I'm near Thurmaston/Rushey Mead, where abouts are you?

That will teach me not to read the fookin thread right LOL :nelson: :headvswal . You will need a pressure tester. All it is ,is a pump that fits onto your rad cap then you pump it until it reaches the working pressure. Leave it for 10 mins and see if the pressure drops or if a leak appears.

Mine did this and it was a turbo coolant hose...right down atthe back on the passenger side...had to in from the bottom...ooooer

A quick update - Refilled it after the car had cooled down last night... Checked it again this morning and it was half empty again! I tried topping it up but I could hear it dripping out somewhere, so I thought sod it - I'm not driving it till the leaks fixed so I took it to the garage on the corner of my street... Hopefully they will sort it! If its a water pump, would they be able to do it or would it be best to go to a specialist?

Chunk if I can get down yours today I will do, if not then I'll have to pop down over the weekend! I'll text ya later anyway!

... I hate not having a car! I feel the urge for a daily driver methinks!

and the steam was coming out of the black cowling in front of the engine!

If the steam was coming from under the cam covers, it almost certainly one of the two short rubber water pipes at the front of the engine. It's a PITA to replace them (fan off, cam covers off, top water pipe off IIRC) but they are only a couple of quid from Nissan..

There's a diagram in the online manual showing the layout - I'll see if I can dig it up...

it could be one of the metal pipes behind the rubber ones, they are £50 for the pair
