BREMBOs fitted and show marked improvement....56Kers Beware...lol

Well its taken waaaaaaay to long just to get these sorted but its been worth it.

And this means something apparently...lol :-

attachment.php?attachmentid=15012&stc=1

and yes...I know i need to clean my wheels:-

attachment.php?attachmentid=15013&stc=1

I wasnt sure if theyd be done in time for Da Pod but me and my mate worked till gone midnight the last couple of days and have got it sorted.

Had lots of problems such as:-

Bolts required were different to that fitted to fit the Brembo calipers...The original bolts were a smaller metric thread size and the bolts required to fit the Brembos were a larger metric thread size.

The Brake hose connections for the Goodridge braided hoses were the wrong ones..females instead of males so new connections had to be flanged and sorted.

The original front brake disk didnt wanna shift so we got a "Fook off" great puller and it just popped off..lol

Guards got in the way so we just cut them off (could of bent them out of the way but I need them off for fitting these:-

Brake disc duct

there not fitted yet as i need to figure a route out for the ducting from the front fog inlet.

Performance in figures :-

Standard TT setup 100mph > 0mph = 7-8 secs

Brembo GTR setup 100mph > 0mph = 4 secs

To be honest the pads I tested the standard setup on were very low but still had full coverage.

But to counter that...

I think I may be able to get below 4 seconds braking on the new ones but the ABS started kicking in so I now need to get a switch fitted to eliminate the ABS for trackdays

The conditions for both tests were:-

tested after 20 mins of normal driving

Flat dry road (private)

Left in third gear and no changing down of gears

Exactly half a tank of fuel (set of brake discs in footwell and spare set of calipers...lol)

standard TT setup:-

280mm discs

4 pot calipers and std pads

Dot 4 Fluid

Brembo GTR setup:-

324mm discs (DBA grooved)

oversized modified 4 pot Brembo calipers

Porterfield pads

Goodridge braided hoses

Dot 5.1 fluid

Custom alloy brake brace (Clicky )

BIG thanks to Smithy/AndyP/MJP/JMB services and all who supplied help on my threads for these.

Major recomendation for the DBA discs and Porterfield pads.

(I was impressed with a little touch on the DBA discs of a heat monitoring facility on them...)

The pistons are modified....

They are made out of Stainless steel instead of alloy..This is to stop the heat transferal from the piston to the fluid....

Also...

They have a "Castelated" head on them which allows air to circulate from inside the actual piston to stop the heat build up..These little race tricks will eliminate brake fade on trackdays.

Now I have these I wonder how i ever managed before....they just seem right for the car now and no longer do you have to worry about thinking "Fook...ive left the braking too late.

Its now more a case of "Why did you brake so early"

I have covered about 200 miles on them and have not had any signs of the dreded "squeeling" from them so looks like Porterfields are the nuts of a pad :duffer: Dont care how long they last...They work like a dream.

So im all set for the Pod tommorow but I know its only gonna want to make me get a move on with the supercharger conversion but thats another day...lol

Oh...and theres a small case of whos gonna finish the last of the JD...I think its gonna be meeeeeeeeeeee :duffer:

Looks sweet mate  all yer hard work an effort has really paid off, all that's left is fit Brembo rears and your all done :) oh nice colour you done on the calipers too.

cheers

smithy

Nice one mate.

Any reason why you gone for DOT5.1 as it is not compatable with ABS, and because of it compesition, eats through the pistons rubber seals?

Would you not better off getting racing spec DOT4?

Well I will be fitting a switchable ABS switch so I can turn it on and off as necesary :)

and because of it compesition, eats through the pistons rubber seals?

oooo..not heard of that problem relating to 5.1 bud....

I thought it was only Dot 5 that was a problem?

Any more details?

Thanks Smithy

You sorted me some nice parts and made my job alot easier...your kit fookin rocks and I really cant recommend enough :)

As for the colour.....

This was a nightmare...

Tried three gold paints before I found one that was a replica of the original Brembo gold....and the finish is alot better than I managed as my mate did them and then baked them in an oven :wack:

Dont know if it is just dot5 or 5.1, but looking on the internet recently about the fluids giving the pros and cons.

5.1 has a higher boiling point, than 4 (Well normal dot4) but because its "thinner" and because its more synthetic (Or something like that) it leaks past the seals quicker.

Dot4 has a lower boiling point (But racing spec dot4 has a higher boiling point than 5 and 5.1) and it absorbes water.

On the upside it doesnt leak past the seals.

Most motor sport drivers (like amature rally and racing) like to go for the racing dot4, changing their entire braking fluid once a year. Understandable really, the DOT5.1 is cheaper but will last longer, but there is more a chance it will leak over time, causing a loss in braking performance, but so slow that you probably wont notice and having the change the seals ever few years.

If people dont agree with what I say dont shoot the messenger, I am just repeating what I have read on the internet.

Looking awesome mate. They really are one of the best upgrades you can do IMO. I've not even bought the new pads and discs off smithy yet and the difference in performance is amazing. Mine have more or less stopped vibrating now after probably 1000 miles of wearing in the second hand discs and pads! will be getting new ones soon as I get a normal job together. Thats great what you did with the pistons and the colour looks perfect. I actually thought it was the standard colour to start with. Dave

anyone got any more info on the 5.1 thing mentioned? always used it, never had a problem?

Thats interesting what you say mate...

I'll have to do a bit of investigating me thinks...lol

looking mighty fine mate!

Thanks fellas... :duffer:

Im like British rail..."I get their eventually"

Good to hear your discs have sorted themselves out...gives you a bit more time to get them sorted ;)

Im waiting for a track day now to really put the pistons to the test...Brands Hatch would be good for the brakes ;)

  • 2 months later...

I did a Brands Hatch track day on the Indy circuit and totally sha**ed my standard brakes !

I was braking as late as I could from about 120 on the start/finish straight - really standing on them (I think my ABS went AWOL) and eventually they gave up the ghost on me - mind you it was fan-f**king-tastic !!

The opportunity to drive our cars somewhere you can really exploit the performance should not be passed up !

I've now got fully adjustable coil-overs, strut brace, fully adjustable arms, track rods and torsion bars front and rear and importantly GTR33 Brembos on the front and fat rubber all round in perparation for the next time I try it (this year hopefully).

It was such a fantastic experience I really can't recommend it highly enough guys.

Mark

Must admit it always amazes me that people forget things like brakes and suspension when tuning cars lol

Brakes on mine are now awsome much prefer the AP's to the brembos ;)

Little bit bigger than standard as well

what did the bottom of the piston look like etc.. i want to make these for a set i have but not sure on some of the details

I think krsmayo could get hold of steve (blackmagic) if you ask him nicely...
