Did you choose a zed - or you just didn't have any more money?

After reading a few threads lately I wondered how many people on here wanted a 'cheap' performance car, and the zed was cheap, and how many chose it even though they could afford something much more expensive?

Who has moved on to something more expensive/new, and who has stuck with the zed? Who has wanted a zed for years, or owned one for years?

I don't earn big money so I couldn't afford anything exotic, but when I didn't have kids I did consider a Honda S2000 - I still like it, but I don't really want it. I like the fact that a zed isn't a twats car - but it's a common man's car not an insanely rich guy's toy. Although people keep suggesting it, I don't think it is a Chavmobile yet. But people still are very snobbish to me about it being a Nissan. The upkeep bills are not insane, like some cars, and it's not a posh granny wagon like some. However, it's still my mid-life crisis come (a bit) early.

I like the zed and as it gets a bit older- I think it only gets more individual, not unfasionable - however manky the one you drive is, it' s definately not just ANOTHER RX-8, is it.

So who's rich and could have anything they chose, but chose a zed, and who wants something more exotic but can only afford an old Nissan? How much have you put into the car in total? and what would that have bought you unmodded!

Bought mine because I always loved the Z, fell in love with it on the launch and always hoped to have one. I bought mine 6 years ago and although it cost a fair wack back then it was still excellent value for money.

Its a shame they have depreciated so much in the UK, kind of taken away the respect these cars once had in some peoples eye.

I know that full respect is given here and thats what matters!!

Long live the Z

Andy

ive liked the z since i was about 15/16. my dad was lookin into buying an import car as a toy. looked at quite a few, sat in a 300zx and i loved it. the engine, the sleek looks (one of the best lookin cars imo), the nice interior. unfortunately he didnt buy one, he got a 911 which is still a damn nice car.

im now 21 and hoping to buy one in mid 2007. im glad they've depreciated! ;) its not about money, its about the car. and the car's ****ing rude!

I was looking for a powerful car and the Z was one of the ones that met the criteria. The final decision was a toss up between a TVR and the Z and the Z won for day to day use and reliability. The TVR would have cost a stack more but that wasn't the deciding factor. I've now had it for about 8 years (I think) and have no plans of selling. I will probably still have a Cerbera sometime soon-ish, but I'll keep the Z.

I was always a fan of the zed and I've always had performance cars, all been 2l turbos though, had to move up to a 3l, lets face it, it's a proper car, makes the right noise, gets a lot of looks, hasn't dated like a lot of jop metal (supra is looking a bit early nineties to me now), I went fot he NA because I'm fed up with tuning tubbys, been doing it for years and they always wind up costing me an arm and a leg despite everything I try to keep cost down. I know an NA 300 is never a cheap car but it's still better to spend the money on something with real presence on the road than a 2l rice rocket! :D

Always liked them and always wanted one as they came out just around the time I started to drive. Didn't get my first one till mid 2002 but was worth the wait and I was blown away with my first proper performance car. If I'm honest though I want a Ferrari 355 next and I've gotta keep the dream alive. Only downside will be that if that happens I bet the owners club won't be as entertaining and helpful as this one!

Just looking for a different car really cos the insurance was due, one night I was getting quotes for cars and thought 300zx give it a try (thought it was way out of range 3.0ltr Twin Turbo  )

I could afford the insurance and when knowing that I had to buy one. Went to a Jap auction place and someone was silly enough to leave a passenger door open in one and I sneaked in and sat there for 10 mins and loved it, propper sports car!

I went to look at a few and did the usual net research and bought a UK one.

I couln't have afforded anything much more expensive than mine (bought 2 years ago) but never looked at anything else. 3 litre Twin Turbo  I was like a dog with 2 dicks

Cost wasn't an issue - I was looking to replace my Mk3 Supra and the logical choice was the Mk4.

I drove the Mk4 Soop, 300zx and 3000gt and chose a ZX. In all honesty the Mk4 Supra is a tiny bit quicker and steers/corners better but it feels too anaethstetised compared to a ZX. Just like the car is driving you, not the other way round. Given that the margin between them is otherwise so small, the ZX was better value at the time.

I have thought about replacing the ZX with something newer recently and my choices to date are a 1998+ Jag XKR or Maseratti 3200 (can be got for £22k), maybe even a new 350z. I ruled out the TVR Cerberra on the reliability stakes.

However I get back in the ZX and all such thoughts go out the window as for the price a ZX does everything the Jag or Mas can do......

Plus the 300zx is still one of the best looking cars on the road, it has aged very well and still turns heads wherever it goes.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Bought mine as a none runner to make a couple a ££ on .. Till I drove it now I'm keeping it. Best 2 wheel drive car ever I recon!!!! Even if mine is a little stuffed at the moment..

i always wanted one of these so i could improve it and carry on where nissan left off ,thet said they made the best sports car in the world and some of us have just made them better

When I was at school it was the car I lusted after. 18 months ago I suddenly realised I could afford one. In fact so far (excluding petrol ;) ) I've spent about a grand less than I did on my previous Pug 306. That's what I call Value For Money.

always wanted one since school, was drunk one night on the net and thought it would be a laugh to get an insurance quote....

it was only £300 more than my 1.1 fiat punto!!! so sold my punto that month and spent 6 months looking for a good SWB TT man...... never looked back (well once... but thats another story!)

Best car i have ever driven and i have been in a few good one's!

For the last several years, I've had my heart set on a Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 4 Cab (apologies in advance - work with muppets in Canary Wharf and it get's to you after awhile!), and finally had enough saved for a deposit on a T reg Tiptronic with all the options. Anyway, I went to Coventry to drive the car - and apart from it being very well put together, it was such a let down because it didn't fell any better than my Zed. I couldn't justify spending £35K on a car that (in my view!) only does what the Zed does anyway. Granted it looks more modern & having a cabriolet this summer would've been great, but the Zed always puts a smile on my face. I've always looked my Zed as a temporary vehicle until I got the Porsche, but I now view it in a new light. So, gonna spend the deposit I saved on doing the Zed up!

Cheers

Roy

Where is the option for...................................

I chose a Z and now I dont have any money LOL :wack:

Just realised ive not replied to this............

I bought my first Z (UK TT auto) 2 and a bit years ago after i had a bike accident, always liked them since my neighbour brought one home (he was a nissan sales manager in the early 90's) he took me out in one and since then ive been pretty hooked!!

I traded my first Z in for TVR Chimerea back in 98, when all the bits finally fell off the TVR and the glue holding it together lost adhesion, i traded that in for a Lotus Esprit S4 which i had always wanted. Had the Esprit for a couple of years and then sold it. Got bored of my lexus and went hunting for something else...... looked at loads of options and just kept coming back to the Z. I was tempted to get an Esprit V8 but, as anyone will know who has been in one or lived with one, it has absolutley no practicallity at all, only enough room in the boot for a toothbrush and a change of pants ! with a near 30K price tag i just couldn't bring myself to do it when comparing it with the Z which cost me 7K ! (jap import 92 TT 40k and immaculate) with Tein suspenion and nice set of alloys it handles superb and has more than enough grunt. Not quite the sports car feel of the lotus or TVR, but close enough and the solid build, reliability ( dare i say it, 2 Z's, 140k of Z mototring and only turbo seals needed doing on my old one after 90k ) and more comfrotable and user friendly interior and some luggage space make it a winner for me ! and i didn't have to sell an organs to buy it !

The Z is quite simply a bloody good car. If had loads of wonga i would still keep it and do some serious mods and probabably buy another !

I have always liked the Zed, but my main passion has always been Porsches. I have owned a few (924, 930, 964, 944) and still have a Carrera 4 (964) in the garage which i now want to sell. Its on ebay if anyone is interested!!!!! (i'm not rich, just in lots of debt:-))

Everytime i saw a 300zx i was always pointing it out to my missus saying i'll get one of those oneday. Just over a month ago, i took the plunge and bought a 300zx UK auto. It gives me similar performance, is a lot more practical, has more interior space and i'm not afraid of ripping it to bits to modify it. I also want to add a PC, upgrade the engine, bodywork, wheels etc.

One thing i was surprised at was was the fuel consumption, the Zed is awful even compared to the 911!!!!

The Zed has had 2 x electrical problems since owning compared to no problems with any of my porsches.

I am still happy though, long live my Zed :-)

If anyone is interested in a porsche911.....................

At the age of 17 pased my test and bought a Mini 1275GT.

At the age of 19 bought a Cortina 2.0S.

etc

etc

25 years on, I drive a small block Camaro. Had a rake of yanks over the years.

Had too sell my Zed earlier this year due to one thing and another :(

My Camaro IROC is now up for sale and I will have another Zed shortly.

This time it will be long term.

What made me want a Zed ???

Imagine sitting at 135mph in your big block Camaro.

This "thing" draws up beside you, passenger looks at you and goes,

"See you at the chippy in 10 mins" and nails it !!

9 minutes later you arrive at the "Chippy" and see you`re first Zed close up.

That was in 92 and it has burned its way into me brain since. :)

Watch this space, coz I have been Zedless for 6 months and will get another !

Sold mine to a guy in the work, so I have to look at it every day as well 1 :(

I will return !!! Away for a hauf !! :duffer:

Alan........

As so many else, I wanted one since I saw it the first time, love in first sight as they say :) Like the shape of it also, even more the strosek version. My father invited them to me, as we didn't have very many imported originally. He had a Z31 back then.
