Just had a call from Nissan, who have said that the rear diff is ready to collapse. Ufortunately, this means nothing to me, can anyone put this into girlie speak for me??????

It's probably just the diff bearing.

what does that mean???

The differential is the small gearbox at the back of the car that joins the prop shaft to drive the wheels...

It's obviously badly worn but could just need a new bearing.

Not exactly a minor job but shouldn't be too costly.

Probably easier to buy a second hand diff from AndyZ in the traders section and get it fitted.

Well........

I have spoken to a few people and most have told me to get a second opinion on the diff rather thank take nissans word for it.

I have to say, I thught getting Ford to work on the Probe was bad, up to now, I've been told that it will take Nissan 2 days to do the work I have asked for which is, wait for it

to replace a piece of hose, fit a new radiator cap and refill the cooling system!!!!!

They also told me the car was a write off cos it is impossible to het hold of a replacement diff! I've only been here a couple of days and even I know that's not true!

So, looks like it will tommorrow before they can test the head gasket for damage. I'm hoping the car will drive OK once the radiator is re filled and then I will be able to take her somewhere else for a second opinion on the diff. Just hoping the engine isn't too badly damaged by the over heat. Keep everything crossed for me!

I'm pretty sure you can buy a brand new diff if you felt the need - I don't know of any parts that are not available anymore.

Then there's the option of repairing yours, replacing with a performance diff or parts, or just getting a used one from a scrapper!

Nissan Mainstealers should be shot! :xxx:

when i took mine into the local dealer for some advice the girl on the counter didnt even know what a 300zx was!!

she worked on the parts section as well

the manager did come out to see it lol

sum places ant got a clue

flairman, get in touch with me fella, i can help you out

Good News!!!!!!!!!!!

Nissan are crap!!!!!!!!!!!

They rang me back and told me that the mechanics REFUSED to work on the car because it was so dangerous and was UNABLE to be made roadworthy again!!!!

I went and spoke to them and to cut a VERY long story short, the engine is PERFECT (except for the missing overflow chamber) and the ONLY problem on the car is the rear diff.

Strange thing is, there was no noise at all during the 500 miles we have driven her, but now, the noise is about 1000 decibels!

I am over the moon, in the space of 90 minutes, my car has gone from a scrapper to having a slight problem!!!!!!!!

Getting her taken somewhere else in the morning and having a second hand diff fitted next week.

Yeah!!!!!!!

to be fair, i dont think many franchise dealers would bother nealing on the plenum for hours losing the skin on their hands replacing the coolant pipes down the back of the engine, i think they would take the engine out. hence a two day job.

depends tho, not that im sticking up for dealers.

take it to someone that knows what their doing.

I could well believe a main dealer removing the engine to fix the Diff

Not the coolant pipes mate, the one that connects to the overflow resevoir, you know, right up front by the radiator cap!!!!
