hello

My car is a series 1. Would it be possible to fit a series 2 climate control pod onto the dash? Would any modifications be required?

yes lots LOL

you would need to change all the venting/ducting/wireing etc im not 100%sure but i dont think its worth considering with all the parts you would need

Why the venting, ducting, wireing ? Surely its just the Controls, and the Control unit for it that differs ?

hmm whats the difference bettween series 1 and 2 sounds like a good mod bit tricky though

I doubt it's just the display that is different.

The way it works is probably different too. For starters the air con will have to have the ability to be told where do direct the flow. This will not be done in the control panel but in the control amp.

You may be able to change the control amp but the wireing and setup of series 1 and 2 will have to be exactly the same and I dont know if they are.

its a bit like saying a 1994 and 1995 engine are the same, when they look the same and so the same job, but there are many many differences.

When I said Controls and Control unit, I meant the Control Panel & Control Amp. I can appreciate that the wireing may be different though, but not the Venting and ducting ?

Series 1 is automatic, it decides where to blow the air. On the display you have an ambient temperature and set temperature.

Series 2 you can set where the air flow goes. On the display is a picture of the drivers seat and arrows where the air will flow. You can select where it goes. There is no ambient temperature displayed though.

They may have changed the venting, ducting and circuts etc.

The chambers may be the same, but there may be extra motors in there, or extra sensors.

The ECU also controls the aircon a little, is this the same?

ooooooooooooooooooo.....never knew that...Thanks :)

I personally think the series 1 system is a bit pants. Clever idea but requires a number of feedback loop in the circuit. At 15 years old do they all really work??

I would love to the upgrade, anythings possible if your a bit clever with electronics.

never knew there was a series 2! sounds a load better than mine! its never quite sure what to do! would be a good mod but sounds nails to get done!

Just saw this thread appear and here is my 2p worth:

Yes, it is possible to convert a Series 1 ventilation system to a Series 2 system. I did this modification about 6 months or so ago with great success.

You need 2 parts:

(1) a Series 2 control unit (the unit on the dash that also has the temp display and wiper buttons)

(2) a Series 2 A/C ECU

Swapping the dash mounted control unit is very straight forward. Remove the screws, unplug the connectors and then work in reverse to reassemble.

Swapping the A/C ECU is a bit trickier and requires the removal of a lot of under dash panelling and pipe work. The ECU is located in the driver side footwell wedged between the transmission tunnel and the upper part of the lower dash (if that makes any sense) Getting to it requires the removal of several panels, the plastic air ducting and some wiring cables (which can be moved to the side). I wouldn't suggest this procedure for anyone with big hands as you're lying upside down with either the clutch pedal or A/T brake pedal wedged in your head and your hands in a space tighter than Christina Aguillera's you-know-what! :x: Oh and you'll need a flashlight to see what you're doing down there ... The A/C ECU is held in place by several screws which are a b*tch to get to but once successfully removed the disconnection of the wiring loom is fairly easy and straight forward. Once swapped over to the S2 ECU you'll have to get it back in there and secure it ... Oh Christina !!!! :wack:

The result of this modification is that you'll now be able to (a) control where the airflow comes out from and (b) a hernia operation ... It took me about 2 hours to do this but I'm sure it can be done quicker by someone who knows what he's looking for.

You will lose the ambient temperature display but that's a minor inconvenience.

I'm really glad I did this mod as my wife has now stopped complaining that the airflow is not comming from where she wants it to ... And any mod to stop a wife nagging or complaining is great value for money in my opinion!

If you have any questions please let me know.

NIce one. Yes it is annoying not picking where the air goes. Many a time I have been freezing and the air con insists that keeping the window warm is more important than frost bitten fingers.

great info, how much did the parts cost?

I got them off Splatt who was breaking his car at the time and I can't remember how much it was all together. Wasn't too dear though. You may want to try AndyZ at RiceRocket (see traders forum) for the parts.

Going on from what Danny said here, there is other complications, although the good news is it worked for Danny, I have tried the same conversion and it did not work?

There may be some difference even between early series one and later series one? all very confusing and disapointing I could not get mine to convert!

Ah yes, forgot to mention about the problem you had with the conversion ... Was too far involved with the whole Christina imagery ... LOL!

Yes, aparently it doesn't always work - not sure why though ...

Nice one Danny  Yes removing/replacing the air con amp (ECU) is a right pain in the arse, I did mine earlier this year, as the old one didnt work properly, and I wouldn't say it's the easiest job in the world :D

Being able to direct where the air goes would be much better, especially if all is needed is the pod and amp.
