Does anyone know if it is possible to convert The 300ZX auto gearbox to a steptronic sequential style gearchange?? or is this wishfull thinking?

YEP! i have heard of something called shift at will, it was fitted to a 300zx and had button gearchange on the steering wheel.

anyone knwo if this kit is any good? looks very promising and at only 990us$ its alot cheaper than getting a manual conv.

how difficult would it be to swap out the old auto controller?

the time delay would still be there wouldnt it? Like when you use the stick to select a gear there is always a short delay before it does it. Kind of defeats the point.

A company called levelten also do electronic overrides for autos, but I've heard some very nasty stories about some of the other things they make (gearboxes that go bang).

Also, I emailed them a couple of times to find out availability/shipping but they wouldn't answer.

TTtim (doesnt come on here much any more) has shift @ will on his & said it was very good

I have the latest SAW v2 fitted to my zed - It's fab - the delay is programmable to a certain degree - as is pretty much everything else.

And you get great support from ESS.

The latest kit comes with paddles rather than buttons and a cool Blue gauge that shows current gear/gearbox oil temp etc.

Cant sat anything bad about it - I have the luxuary of auto when I want it - and the fun of a manual when I need to drive hard round bendy bits in a hurry

Hope that helps.

I'm really interested in these, espacially considering the cost of the unit, how was it to fit though?

...the manuals are pretty good - there is a lot of work to do - took me pretty much a whole day for the electrics and half a day for the paddles (cos I dont have a standard steering wheel fitted, and I modified/converted the paddles to larger alluminium units). I have a Jap import so some of the colours of some of the wires were wrong, but as long as you go by wire location - all is well. I also incorporated the Jap Hold/Fast gearbox button so that it is the switch that switches between Sport and Normal shift programs. (Also very programmable).

I spent a lot of time checking and double checking everything before I fired her up and tested. I really like it - and cant imagine not having the facility now I have it.

I specifically purchased an auto Zed so that I could fit this at some time, because I prefer the option of Auto with manual override to pretty much any other gear change option.

Hope that helps....

im lookingat getting this unit, only problem is ive got a mom evo wheel fitted to my car, so the connector for the cruise is exposed but no loom/stock wheel... do you think there is anyway i could get this to work on my after market wheel andy? Ive read through the manual online and its very comprehensive, its just the fitment against the steering wheel im worried about..

also does it remove the consant high rev / no power you sometimes get on the autobox like when accelerating slowly up a long hill.... auto box kinda gives lots of revs but little power... unless you boot it...

I also have a custom wheel - send me your private email address and I will post you some pictures of my steering wheel before and after paddles.

And yeah! being in the right gear legging it up a hill, or being able to change down when YOU want is a great help.... Cruise control (or lock up) still works.

To switch from pure auto into SAW mode you just pull both paddles at the same time - same to disingage.

It's a DIY job to fit it then? I'm very tempted to go for it...
