Fuel Consumption

I knew the mpg wouldn't be great on a Z when I bought it but I can only get about 18mpg even when on long journeys.

What kind of mpg are you guys getting?

I only really use the car to go to work & back (4 miles each way) about 120 miles a week. Even when I resist booting it I still only manage about 17mpg.

Is this normal or is somthing a bit dodgy?

Pity really because in my old FTO I could redline it in every gear & it would still do about 25mpg.

Having to restrain myself in the Z as every time I put my foot down I remember how much it is costing me when the Turbos kick in.

Still, the Z is loads more fun & a shit load faster, arse end gets a bit slidey in this weather though, don't it?

If you have your heater, on it does use more power like the AC. Try it. Put the heater on and watch the revs climb, put it on econ mode and watch it drop.

thats cos the a/c compressor comes on pretty much all the time, it does it to remove humidity from the cabin due to the evaporator under the dash, it isnt used for cooling. The heater works by passing air over the engine coolant thus doesnt really use any more fuel apart from the tiny bit used to profuce the electricity to drive the fans

I have TT 1990 Jap import auto - no mods.

I have just passed 190 miles and am in between middle and last quarter mark on the fuel guage. - Been driving carefully with the ice. So this will be a good week for mpg!

I agree - miles per tank is misleading. You need to top up, note the mileage, run it to the next top up, note the mileage and the amount of fuel you needed to top up. Use the calculator and hey presto. For me it's 22mpg consistently for 3 + yrs.

Coogs,

Did you notice any difference when you swapped from auto to manual ?

A simple tip for better mileage is to never use your brakes on a motorway ( unless you really need to) You should be able to predict traffic movement ahead and roll off the throttle and let engine braking do the rest. Smooth as silk. Unless you like slamming down from 140mph to 50mph behind Mavis Snodgrass in her fiesta and scaring the bejesus out of her. Can be fun but it burns fuel vouchers.

Andy,

Never noticed any difference between auto and manual. Bit surprising really. Autos higher gearing should help economy but it saps more power so maybe it evens out in the end.
