I'm trying to extend the range of my wireless network at home.

I've added a new SSID and my main PC can see both SSIDs. My laptop (further away) can only see the one nearest to it  Any ideas how I can do this or am I barking up the wrong tree? All of the kit is Belkin

Need another wireless box to act as a repeater. SSID is just a security code id'ing the network, do you mean something else?

Dave

You need to configure your 2 access points on the same SSID and hopefully one will have a repeater mode you can use to extend things.

The way you've set it up now, you've got 2 seperate networks to log in to.

Thanks for the replies fellas! I've looked into this further today and have ordered a wireless repeater. I'll try the SSID rename tomorrow morning as they are indeed showing as 2 seperate networks on the first PC and the second SSID does allegedly have a repeater mode

If its got a repeater option then you wont need the one you've ordered...

Sounds confused there bud, when you say SSID what exactly are you referring to ? if you mean the wireless box itself and you already have two, then one of them may work as a repeater rather than having to buy another one. SSID is just a logical , software set ID for the network, nothing to do with hardware. pm me if you want and I can help on messenger or by pm. Dave

The SSID I'm referring to is effectively a wireless access point. Sorry for the confusion fellas - I really should know more about this as I design and install networks for a living :slap:

PS. Thanks for the offer of help Dave - I'll see how I get on tomorrow! :)

Yep, go directional. Do a google search for "yagi" and "cantenna" and roll your own from a Pringles can. I used to work for an ISP down in Dorset (this is going back 3 and a half years), and we trialled some home made antennae and got good signal over about 13 miles (or something like that) line of sight I seem to remember. Portland Bill to some hill just inland from the Chesil bank. So directional *is* probably a bit overkill, but will work a treat.
