Disabling the electronic gubbins that controls the seatbelt recoil.

I think this has probably been discussed at great length many times. I'd like to know more about the electronic controled seatbelt recoil system. What is it exactly supposed to do and how does it work?

 

Why does it break down and play havoc with the system causing the seat belts to either go slack, lock or fail to recoil?

 

Is there either a way of disabling this or cleaning up contacts to make it work as it should?

Any electronics that has some control over something as universal as seat belts just doesn't seem right... :nono:

could be wrong, but think this is only present in the series 2

on the seat belts for my 1990 jap 2str swb there is a black cable with a connector that comes off my seat belts, that connect to another cable in the door.. this the same thing??

Yep mine has them and if you unplug them the seatbelts nolonger go slack. however i dont know how safe this is to leve uncorrected, so i pluged mine back in.

yeah...(posted this some months back) IIRC there is a built-in (design) feature which allowed a certain amount of slack so the belt didnt get uncomfortable by snagging on your clothes etc... its electronically controlled...pop off the door card and there is a small connector which runs from the seat-belt unit...it controls the slackness if you unclip it the belt then operates as a normal retracting belt

Something I'll do tomorrow I think. There's no way of fixing this is there? Also, any ideas why it goes faulty in the first place?

cant miss it once you pop the door card off...its the only 2 wires coming out of the unit....as to why it goes i reckon a build up of fluff n stuff is to blame....in the event of a smash the whole thing snaps shut in a micro second (thats the theory)...though it is a little disconcerting to be zooming along with a pile of slack seatbelt in your lap

if your seatbelts go slack then they are not working properly. mine used to work as tho they had just come out of the factory, nice and taught with instant retraction. Also whenever you slammed on the breaks the seat belt would automatically lock before you even moved forward with the momentum. But i took my door card off to fix a bit of trim and now it dont work properly :(
