Last time I had my brake pads replaced, the numpty that replaced them didn't put the shims back on and kindly left me with a pile of metal plates in a box.

As I am replacing brakes this weekend need to put the shims in this time.

Please could you advise what I need and don't need. I have (picture attached):

4 metal plates with grilles cut into

4 metal plates in a wedge shape

8 smaller plates which were together in pairs

2 small corners

Also where do these go when I fit them...

Thanks

Rob

am I missing anything I need

Not quite sure what the x2 are but all the others look fine. Small ones will be for the rear.

look like the pad retainers on the diagram - only have 2 though... are these needed??

Thanks for all your help with this... Probably take me all weekend to do the brakes...

Anything I need to do to prepare pads and discs when I take them out of the box and fit, I'm sure the pads go on as they are but do I need to clean the discs with anything..

Cheers

Just had a good look at the shims and in places the coating has come off, slight rusting - is this an issue.. Will this make a difference if I bought a new set? Also how much is a new set and who will have some in stock?? I have put them in WD40 for the time being.

Cheers Mantav8 - Can I pick up brake cleaner from somewhere like Halfords??

Thanks Again

I actually thought mine were stainless but now I'm not certain. Mine are pretty knackered, but it never seemed to make any difference to the working or installing. They should have a fine coating of copper grease anyway.

Brake cleaner is available in Halfords. As far as I can tell from the smell it's spray cellulose thinnners, so that or meths would probably work fine too.

Thanks Andy.

Do I coat all sides of the shims??

Rob

rob if you need someone to fit and replace all of your brake parts i would be willing to ofer my services to you as i am a mechanic and have just done all the brakes on my car

Carb cleaner that leaves no residue or isopropyl alcohol ought to be fine too.

A bit of surface rust ought be no issue on the shims, as long as they're still in one piece, just give them a clean, light coating of copper grease and you're away.

If you need a new set, though, I think I have a set of fronts and rears in the shed (boxed and new) that you could have for postage + a few beer tokens.

Stupid question from me....

When I fit my Brembos I take it I wont need to re-fit these shims as the pads are different sizes....are they only needed for the standard nissan brakes? will i get new shims with the new bigger pads or are they not required at all in the Brembos? :slap:

Yes the new pads will be a different size.

I think my new calipers have the shims included (as well as the pads!:D).

Suggest you call Mike Feeney to check in his catalogue for what you actually need.

Yeah, likewise, what Andy said. Shims are in mine to. I don't think its a major bother if you don't fit them, just desirable. Don't they help stop squeal and general noise? I expect someone on the skyline forum has some knocking around they can throw your way, or Mike. Dave
